Gunsmithing FN SPR mods for AI mags-some ??? on variables

I have a few FN SPR actions that I bought off CDNN. I know it will require some machining to allow them to take AI mags, but I have a few questions on the impact of these mods.

First, will opening up the bottom of the action have any negative effect if I decide to stay with the factory DBM for a while?

Second, will the basic modifications allow me to use the Alpha Mag Type II (2.895 OAL) magazines or is a further mod necessary to ensure feeding of the longer cartridges?

Last, are these mods something my local smith would be able to do with relative ease once his mill is set up? That is, once it is set up to do one action, is it going to be quick and easy to do two or three at the same time?

I am planning to have CDI do a full install of their bottom metal on my first build, but I may try an XLR chassis on a future build and thought if my gunsmith is going to do one, he may as well knock them all out at once.

The modification to the bottom of the action is minimal. I did mine with a dremal. It will not affect future use of the factory DBM. I can not answer about the alpha mag.

I thought that was a Remington 700?

Here is a SPR thread-

I just finished milling my action (SPR) and bedding the stock a short time ago. The milling is an easy task. The CDI metal is good stuff also.

Read the entire post. The rifle that C. Dixon has pictures of is a LA Winchester Model 70. If you go farther down there is some information on the SA FN/M70 actions also.

The main purpose of the post is to point out the inherent safety issues with machining and removing metal from the bottom lug abutments.

Thanks for the info and the links. I think we will give it a try on our own, though I will probably still send my first rifle to CDI so I know what "right" looks like.
