Everyone talks about how important "follow though" or staying in the gun is.

Please enlighten me? The round has already hit the target while one is practicing "follow through" thus making it unnecessary as it pertains to that specific shot.

In MHO the only reason for staying in the gun would be the follow up shot.

I think the concept is more to just reinforce the idea of not disturbing the sights before the bullet is gone. For newer shooters, it can be good for them to over-emphasize this, as consciously "following through" helps to ensure that they do this. As a shooter progresses, it becomes second-nature and doing it right is just part of the process instead of a slow, deliberate thing. When I shoot, I am off the sights pretty quickly and I couldn't really tell you if I follow-through or not. I do know that the shots go where I call them.

Sterling Shooter will be along shortly with a long dissertation on the call/strike corollary, and to recommend an M1 Garand clinic for you. Or me...

I agree with you. In shotgun sports like trap doubles or bunker trap a fast lock time and staying in the gun is what you have to do. I just thought it was sort of silly to worry about check weld etc. after a bullet was on the paper or steel.

Your position after the bullet leaves doesn't effect it's impact, but by learning follow through you ensure your position when it leaves is consistent, therefore your recoil management is consistent. If you don't believe that matters, load up some 215s and go shooting.
