This is too funny not to share...
Jacque, my better half, is a football fanatic. Me, not so much. She watches every game and can make the ref calls before the refs. It's just spooky. Her football knowledge is encyclopedic. I watch a game and really never know what inning they are in. Usually, I am hunting anyway.
Each fall, she enters several pools and spends hours agonizing over her football picks. And usually does well (top 10), but always with angst over upsets, underdogs, games that don't get predicted, etc. It is a weekly ritual.
At the end of last season (after watching all the hysterics), I said that I would do the pool for 2010-2011. But that I would pick teams 'at random' each week. And I bet her that I would do at least as well as she would. My belief: trying to pick teams is pure chaos theory. Too hard to predict the binary outcome of 16+- games each week.
SOOOOO... after 3 weeks. I am in first place in a pool of more than 200 people. And based on my picks for tonite's game and Monday's game... I can only pull away from the pack by up to 28 more points (assuming both my picks win.)
So here's how I picked teams/points:
Week 1: Completely at random.
Week 2: Winners picked based on proximity to French Lick, Indiana (Why? I just like saying "French Lick." And Larry Bird is from there.) Points at random.
Week 3: Which city is most conservative (ie. likely to vote Red in an election) Point assignments again at random.
In other words, I pulled the picks out of thin air. And it looks like my randomness theory of football picks is working.
This week... my picks will be based on throwing two balled-up pieces of paper (with team names written on them) at our cat. Whichever one the cat runs after will be my pick.
Oh... I suck, because Jacque is currently in last place. And I suck according to her, not according to my placement in the pool. heh heh heh
