    Hi, new here..

Anyone here know of any competitions in or around the Fort lewis, WA area?

I googled and used the search on SH but no luck. Maybe I just didn't look hard enough. I'm in Iraq but should be back around august. Just hoping to find someone that can point me in the right direction.

In no way do I have the skill nor the rifle to compete, but I sure would like to attend to watch and learn.

Well thanks, I have already picked up a few things from SH that may help me at the range.

    Have a good day

Lindy, if he would be well received the Army sure has changed since I was in.

hang around range 15 on the weekends to find your in.

    your with 4/2 SBCT?

your best bet is to check out the SHWW group in the members link up

Not alot of comps at lewis. spent the last 11 years there in the SBCT's. there was some 3-gun stuff sprouting up here and there, near chehalis, and silverdale in the past. iirc there was a couple (3-gun)near shelton a couple years back.

    Re: Fort Lewis?

Thanks Pat M, that's more than what I was able to find.

Lindy, yes I am with C Batt 1-37FA 3-2SBCT, out of Lewis.

It would be cool if I would be received well at 2nd batt but I am not of their kind.. I'm a leg.

Onemoretime, not everything has changed lol.

I do have a bravo4 buddy in 1-14 Cav but he just drinks beer and shoots crap in his back 40. He is a wealth of knowledge, but doesn't compete.

reconpathfinder- I plan on spending many a weekend at range 15 when I get home.. Thanks for the heads up on the SHWW group. I will check it out.

    Re: Fort Lewis?

    Again Thanks!

I do have a 700 SPS, BBL, in 308. I havent put to many rounds down range with it yet maybe 400 or so. One thing I did was free float the barrel and ( dont laugh ) put about 3 1/2 pounds of lead fish weight's in the rear of the butt stock secured with spray foam. I didnt have the cash for a nice stock but I have surely improved the original stock. sitting at about 11-12lbs with harris and 3x9. Barely moves when I shoot now. Im going to get some good glass when I get back. most likey a Mk. 4 or Millet.

    And lots of practice.

So again, I just want to send out a thanks and HOOAH to all those that replied.

First off WELCOME to the Hide!

You are welcome to come to Montana and shoot with us on a weekend that works for you. The long range possibilities are almost endless at AR. We have a new position under development that starts at 1500 yards and extends out past 2600 yards, and of course everything in between. We are unknown distance field shooters, and so all of our engagements are in a field course setting and not on a known distance rifle range. If you feel inclined, come join us.

    Re: Fort Lewis?

We used to have a shoot once a month at Ft Lewis on KD-22 - the 1k range - it was called "The 1000 yard League" - put on by the 41st inf div (Nat'l Guard). Those were some awesome matches. I shot against several of the country's best Palma shooters there - totally enjoyed the comradrie we had.

After 9/11 and with some personal issues the guy setting it up had - things went south and we haven't had a match for a while.
I've done some inquiring to try to get that going again but it won't be this year I'm sure. Perhaps next year if you are stationed there - maybe you can do some digging around on base for me to see what it will take.

I enjoy shooting Paul Bunyan - it's only about 10 or 15 miles from Ft Lewis. I've shot 1st place at the 600 yard line 6 times down there - lot of fun. Er that was my iron sights days, with a scope it's even more fun!

Give a shout when you get into town - we'll go hit some clear cuts down that way - have laser will travel.

I live in Bremerton, about 40 miles north of Ft Lewis.

    Re: Fort Lewis?

Longeyes - you're in Graham? Neat lil town and only a mile from Paul Bunyan - tell me you shoot there!!!

It's not as much fun since town encroached on that range - I had an AD with my winchester, damn jewell trigger anyway - sent a round at a 45 degree angle - probably landed on Fred Meyer's roof LOL

We really should coordinate a clear cut shoot down that way one of these days -

    Re: Fort Lewis?

I use to shoot a Ft Lewis in the Regional HP/1000 yard 4th of July Match every year.

It was run by the WANG, Don Manning, (Shooters Choice-Yakima WA)

It was an excellent match. Manning had made a Mini Gun that he used to start the match.

I think a check with the NRA competitive division would list the matches.

    Re: Fort Lewis?

Longeyes, Augustis, Jrs66vette, ArticLight, & Kraig

Thanks for the warm and enthusiastic welcome! Thanks for the offers to shoot, I will def. PM those of you that live near post when I get home.

Augustis, If I am ever in your AO I would love to try some long, long range shooting.

Jrs66vette, I eventially want to be part of 2nd batt. working on figuring out a reenlistment that includes 11B, Airborne, and Pre-Ranger.. My wife is going to be pissed that I just get back and then i'm off to school. But it's something that I have to do. As a Field Artillery Tactical Data System Specialist (FDC). I have realized artillery is not the life for me.

Articlight, I got to play on range 19,20,21 for a 2 week Long Range Marksman class. It was the best class I have every received from the army. PI's were from Benning and a AI's were from 1-14 CAV Recon/ Scout Platoon. Now the class was mainly focused on M4's out to 600. But we did get to play with the M24 for the last 2 days. I learned more about shooting in that 2 weeks than I ever thought I knew about shooting. I was able to reach out and "touch" 1,018 yards 3 out of 10 times after some very good instuctions from a Sgt. Self ( 1-14CAV ) That class is what got me hooked on LR shooting. next week went I went out and bought my baby ( R700 SPS, BBL, 308 )

I wish that they would still hold those shoots on range 22. Maybe when i get back we can see if its possible to start it up again.. I had asked around before and was told only a unit sponsored event could shoot there. gota have RSO's and such. But who knows maybe we can figure something out.

Again Thank you for your kindness, I will PM you guys when I get back in August/ish. Until then I plan on gleaming as much knowledge as possible off you guys.

    Have a HOOAH day!!!

Here are some pictures of what goes on at my place that may give you something to look forward to until you return ;O) You can bring your family to Montana, visit Yellowstone Park, and see some of the other sights while you are here... Speaking of sights, bring your rifle and we will help you with your LR unknown distance field shooting applications. Until then, be safe!
