What would cause fouling around case head like this in a bolt action? This was from a handload shot in my 6.5 creedmoor tikka today. Never seen this before. Once fired lapua SRP brass. No pressure signs primer looks fine. This was a mild load because this was my first time using N555. Shot 15 rounds this happened in 3 of them.

Was it the first 3 you shot, maybe there was some oil in the chamber? Was rifle cleaned prior to shooting?

Yes rifle was just cleaned. I just thought about. I was looking on another forum. Could like be a low pressure sign? Muzzle were even lower than I expect mild load.

Possibly, not enough pressure for the brass to seal off the chamber. Can't really see much from those pictures.

Use a comparator to check the cases before and after firing.
If they don't grow not enough pressure.
Also fired brass should not slip back into the chamber

IMO, if you look at pic#4, you have gas coming back into the chamber. Most of the time if you have residuals left in your chamber after a cleaning, you would get a false pressure indicator, as in higher.
I would determine if you have enough powder in your case, or see if your brass is anywhere close to chamber length.

So I think It was just low pressure. This was the first time using N555. Using Berger 130s and once fired lapua SRP brass. The range from vihtavuori is 40-44 grain. I loaded 3 rounds starting at 41 going up to 42.5 by 0.5 as a initial test. When I got home and looked at my log 2 of the 3 fouled brass were 41gr load and the other was 41.5gr. I measured this in a comparator as recommended and found they have not expanded. I took a piece of sized once fired brass and zero’d it on the comparator the pieces of fouled brass measured zero. So my assumption is this was caused by low pressure failure of the case to expand and the gas fouling coming back into the chamber.
