Good Morning Gentlemen.
my mother in law found this in her fathers old foot locker. he was a WWII veteran in europe.

this helmet is small, about 4 inches in length and 2 inches tall.

i looking for any info anyone can provide as to what purpose it served

i wasn’t sure where to post it, so if not appropriate don’t hesitate to move to proper place.

Small helmets like that were also used as a sort of "stand in" when marriages were performed while the soldier was at war. In German It was called "fernheiratsantrag", and I have seen these helmets on little pedestals for sale at some of the militaria flea markets here in Germany and Belgium. They are generally rare to find, and are super-rare with the accompanying photograph of the bride, helmet and pastor.
