The .223 will work just fine within 150.... I've done it before. (shot placement friends and yes I feel confident enough to take a clean shot).
Here is the reg I cut and pasted off the NGPC deer hunting web page:
LEGAL WEAPONS FOR ANTELOPE and DEER
Firearm Season:
rifles that deliver at least 900 ft. lbs of energy at 100 yards;
handguns that deliver at least 400 ft. lbs of energy at 50 yards;
muzzleloading rifles .44 cal. or larger;
muzzleloadering muskets .62 caliber or larger, firing a single slug;
shotguns of 20 gauge or larger that fire a single slug;
crossbows that have a draw weight of 125 pounds or more.
Semi-automatic firearms holding more than six cartridges are NOT allowed.

You forgot the part where centerfire rifles .22 caliber or smaller aren't permitted, but that's fine. good luck on the hunt.

I'm headed out in the AM for rifle season in Missouri. I don't have private land to hunt so i'm stuck hunting with masses of morons on public land. Hopefully I don't get mistaken for a deer while wearing blaze orange.
I hope that I actually get one this year. It's been several years since i've gotten anything.

so far youth season we got one on public land, but first day of firearm regular season on private place today was a dead stick, zero contact and a soreass for tryin. and as for free meat? you kidding , the state's got their hand out wantin paid.
