Friendly Competition Shooting Day

A group of my close buddies got together this past weekend and I hosted a "Friendly Competition Shooting Day". All but 3 of the participants (myself and two other PRS buddies) don't shoot very often. They all own guns, but only shoot a handful of times a year. Usually when we shoot together - we just stand stationary and dump mags down range and end up burning up way too much ammo in a very short amount of time. So this time around - I decided to host a "match" type event. 6 stages, using a mix of ARs, Pistols, Shotgun, and a bolt action .22. Every stage was "hit to move - fastest time wins". Winner won bragging rights. We stopped for a cookout between stages 4 and 5. We shot from 12noon until about 4:30pm. Because of the varying degree of firearm experience across everyone, we made extra sure to enforce safety every step of the way. Every one was safe and had an absolute blast. My wife was able to grab some sweet photos.

I've started taking her to my matches and she photographs. she enjoys it. i need to get her a camera of her own. we've been borrowing her sisters or another friends.

I know many wives just aren't interested in guns but getting her on board and participating is more time together.

We go shooting more than to movies.

she shoots with me. she's slowly warming up to the idea of building a bolt gun and shooting matches.

all the guys brought their girls to the shooting day and they hung out inside and drank wine and gossip'd. so she didn't want to shoot with us "guys"

I belong to a little SKS group and most of the "guys" don't want to shoot with her

I don't think either of us won that time, but one of us usually does

Good on you for hosting a casual match.

I usually do something similar once a year, I used to do it more often but it's not worth the trouble anymore. All my friends are gun owners, as are most of my friendly acquaintances, and I usually invite around 30 people, months in advance. I can count on 20-25 of those people saying they'll be there come hell or high water. Then I can count on 2-5 of those people showing up, and then I can count on half that number getting a call from the wife and leaving before guns get uncased.

I give up trying to figure out what the deal is. Everyone is aware its a very casual event, calling it a match is a stretch. Anyone can borrow any of my guns they need, round counts are low, stages are designed to accommodate non match shooters, no tricky "gotcha" stages, no overly hard targets. There is always plenty of notice and reminder texts, most of these guys are all still onboard a couple days before the match but go to radio silence the day before.

No, I'm not even a little bitter about it....

Yup.
The same people are always excited to talk about gun purchasing when they see me, but talking about shooting always sends them running.

That's why we have these nice internet shooting get togethers
Much cheaper than getting out there.

Twice a year we travel 1600 miles round trip to south Florida for the SKS thingy.
4 days camping (sort of), food, and shooting and more food
This one got cancelled but have been going for a few years.
