good day
I just bought a new m700 5R and I want to set it for across the course highpower competition and I need a good front sight. I have always shot service rifle(M1A) but since the eyes are going away I need a better system.
All the gunsmiths I have talked to, want me to have the end of the barrel turned down to accept a over the barrel sleave to mount the front sight. I am not exactlly sure i want to gto this route. Are there any alternatives on the market that will give me a the same sturdiness as the aforementioned system?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated..

Two holes and a front sight base from Champion's Choice gets er done assuming the gunsmith owns and knows how to use a Forster sight hole drilling fixture.

If you have spent any time at all around the HP scene you would have seen this setup many a time on the firing line.

I have seen it on pretty much every bolt gun out there. the problem i am having is that the gunsmiths in this area of NC don't want to drill and tap the barrel. they say it's not a good system. i think they don't have enough experiance to do it right. i believe they are skeered..haha..

I tend to agree with your assessment

The bands do allow you to do some things with leveling up your front and rear sight that the drilled and tapped bases don't. That said, your choice of match rifles, the Remmy 5R, is not something I would put high on my list for a whole long list of reasons.

Re: front sight for a m700 5R

I have been out the highpower game for a number of years now and just recently got the M1a out and went to the range. I found out very quickly that i need better sights. i bought the 5r a couple years back and haven't even fired it yet. i am starting to realize that i need to rethink this route. i knew i would run into problems when i discovered that my old gunsmith had passed away. (frank smith). the gunsmiths that i have talked to don't even know what a "clip slot" is. any suggestions on who i can contact?

I think anyone shooting SR today and not using an AR is beating their head against a wall. See post in the semi auto section on Les Baer and White Oak Precision. There are some high masters on there that I suspect will be glad to help.

And this has what exactly to do with shooting match rifle?

Joe, nowadays the boltrunners are for the most part running an Eleseo tube gun with a Pierce action or a Tubb 2000. The Tubb is out of production. Semi-auto guys are running rifles based on the AR15 receiver set rather than the AR-10 receiver set for weight, balance, and less reciprocating mass.

I'd take a look at these web sites below to get up to speed on Match Rifle these days. You'd do very well starting out with a 223 AR Match Rifle configuration if the ergos work for you. Otherwise, keep an eye out for an old M70 bolt gun already set up for XC work. They are not very in demand these days, so bargains can be had on them. Some very nice ones have passed through the nationalmatch.us site in the last few months.

There appears to be some ambiguity as to what is going on with the Tubb and CSS rifles via Creedmoor, so you might want to call them. They had their own bolt repeater built on a Pierce action and CSS stock, but now the site shows the Tubb as orderable and no mention of the Pierce/CSS setup.

Good luck and welcome back to the sport!

Re: front sight for a m700 5R

The problem with the old school dovetail mount front sights for HP is that when you make your elevation change from 300 to 600 you'll have to put the full adjustment on the rear sight (about 11 MOA) this will force you to raise your face to maintain sight alignment, if your stock is not equipped with an adjustable cheek piece, it's preferable to go with a ladder front sight so you can make the major elevation adjustment up front (about 10 MOA) then just use the rear to fine tune your elevation, nearly everyone uses them in HP nowadays even with rifles equipped with adjustable combs, they are the better system.
