Re: FSC 2011 Sept. 10 & 11th Pics
I have mixed thoughts about zeroing out on the know your limits stages because of overestimating ones skill level. I understand the logic of having a serious penalty for overestimating your skill and agree with that idea.
Perhaps having some kind of different penalty such as a required change of position (uses time, and gets you off your rifle, requiring a re-mounting the rifle) would allow people some points if they have a miss rather than zeroing the stage completely.
Some other ideas for know your limits are different points for different sized targets, AND different points for different positions used. Combining the size and position points possibilities really confuses most shooters, and they over think trying to figure out which target/position to use.
Jeff Cooper told us what to do long ago: "If you can get closer, get closer. If you can get steadier, get steadier." So for me it is always as steady as I can get, then target size selection is the only remaining item.
Overall, it was a fabulous match. The zeroing out portion of the know your limits is fine with me because of the logic behind it. I'm just trying to think of other things that could be considered, or added in to make the shooter have more decisions to make.
I think requiring people with loaded firearms to think is an excellent idea. Anything that makes shooters think when shooting is terrific. Also, getting people out of their comfort zone and requiring them to think while outside of that comfort zone is great training. After all, your brain is your most powerful weapon...so learn to use it.
