I don't want to bunch up any panties nor be disrespectful and I do understand the Thin Blue Line and The Brotherhood, I have a Son in LE also.

Yesterday they had an old traditional Catholic Mass in Latin in downtown Denver for the man and the streets were lined with people and a procession of Cop cars that went for a couple of miles, hundreds of them, to take him to the next staging area for the Memorial Service today.

This morning they had a rather large number of LE vehicles for escort from wherever they had him, up I-25 to Hwy.7 then West on Hwy.7 to the church.
On Hwy.7 the procession gained about 400-500 LE patrol cars and other vehicles, lights going, covered by footage from Helos or some type of aircraft from local News channels and it is impressive with the Fire Trucks and Flags and all of the people along the streets and Highways in support of him, to say the least. As repoted on the News these vehicles came from ALL States around us and as far away as Ohio, and New Jersey with a trailer of stuff for the Widow.

My hat is off to the man as he had the balls to take who he had with him at the time and go in, and I really think that if there was no one else there , he was going in anyway as he heard shots being fired. and it was minutes from the time the call came in, but, he was going in to shut this bullshit down instead of waiting for someone else to do his job, and he was not alone, I think 3 others went with him.

Obviously it did not end well for him, but he DAMN SURE was doing what he thought best at the time and could hear shots going off inside and waited for NO ONE, unlike the Columbine incident, where the only Brave person was driving a FireTruck with LE huddled behind it. We really lost a HERO here.

My question is how do you LEOs, that do these nice things, cover your expenses? Is it from your Unions or Fraternal organizations that pay the bills for fuel, housing etc.? Do you take personal time off to do this or is it paid by the Dept. and who is on watch when you are gone and out of the lineup? Those vehicles cost a lot to run from Ohio and New Jersey to here and those are obviously LE vehicles,- where is the money coming from to pay for this?

Here in Sterling I am sure there is a car or 2 with locals and CSP also in the procession, but, I also see them out on the street today taking care of buisness too, so not everybody is doing the Parade thing.

So again, I ask how you do such a nice thing for a Fallen Brother, and I respect that, but who pays for that to come all the way from New Jersey or Ohio in a marked car with all of the lights and such and knowing how the vehicle is marked it is not a POV? Some taxpayer is paying for that. How does that work out?

Regards. FM

I sure as hell hope that some of my tax dollars are contributing to this memorial. Just as I hope that my tax dollars supported every other memorial for fallen LEO......

The tax payer pot is probably paying for it. Not all tax-payer money is spent wisely. What's wise and worthwhile to some is not to others. It comes down to our core values, or rather those of whom we elect or are hired into the positions to make the decision to use it like this. It seems like a waste from a very neutral fiscal standpoint, but if it is celebration in support of our culture is it that bad that our public pool of money pays for it?

I'm no fan of fanfare and I share your concerns. However, I do believe it has something do with the backlash police have been facing in recent years, the more integrated digital culture, and it being a movement to celebrate the falling of a public defender in good light, where so often they are not recognized— even shamed in the case where they act too slow, or not at all. Also they have budgets that probably allow it. I can't say how manning is, but there are plenty of off duty first responders, each department surely can't shirk on their jurisdictional duties.

The shame to me is that his bravery is commendable but not exceptionally unique. Correct me if I'm wrong, this type of coverage far surpasses the sacrifices of many others in his career field or otherwise. This is more a knock on the departments coordinating this for picking and choosing where they want to pour all their efforts into honoring their fallen. This is just a general opinion, I know there are many components I'm overlooking or unaware of.

I dont think tax dollars should pay for an officers parade-like memorial when he died doing what he was hired to do. Those that get wrongly killed by the police when minding their own business don’t get a city wide tax payer paid parade-like memorial. I’m not knocking this man. Just putting it into context.

I asked my Son as to how his Dept. handles this type of thing after I had posted the question here, as I figured someone on here would chime in as to how their Dept. does it and that really didn't happen nor answer my question.
He told me their Union has a fund set up for this type of thing from dues they pay and the LEOs involved take Vaca or personal time off to attend and their Union re-emburses them for gas, food, lodging, etc. but the Dept. furnishes the vehicle and they also send along things for the Family or Widow that they think they might need or want, lots of paper plates etc. and Cash.
My Son's Dept is not huge but not Podunk small either and rarely go out of State for things like this unless it is fairly close.

Thank you all for answering my original question as to how this goes on. You were very helpfull and I am sure I am not the only person that has wondered about this. I now know how one Dept. handles it but wonder about the rest.

RIP Brave Officer Talley, we need more like you that go in and take care of business.
