The British crapped a litter of lizards after their observers reported the battle. The entire fleet was obsolete.

Apparently Monitor's commander was reluctant to use a full powder charge in its guns for fear of blowing them, while Virginia was only carrying typical shot and not the equivalent of armor-piercing because Buchanan hadn't expected to encounter anything more than a conventional ship.
Would be interesting to see a recreation of how full charge and contemporary AP would've affected the ships. Personally I'd think Monitor would've been obliterated and Virginia would be disabled significantly, provided Virginia could adequately target Monitor's turret (but Virginia had plenty more guns to bear, after all).
The best way to do this is with dental floss. Wrap floss tightly around the finger starting at the knuckle working all the way to the ring. Stick the loose end under the ring and then pull the floss down towards the finger nial and unravel the floss. As you do it will pull the ring towards the knuckle.
