Gas block riser?

I was curious if they make a riser for gas blocks, or possibly a bigger gas block that lines up with AR-10 uppers. I was sitting here brain storming about pointless crap and I came up with this mind fuck, why is it they use a gas block that does not line up with the upper receiver? Am I stupid for thinking it would be better to use any sight instead of being limited to about 3 or 4 different front sights? I honestly would just like to know why AR15 gas blocks are used. Is there any logic behind that? Thanks for the education?

Re: Gas block riser?

I'm pretty sure it's the standard height picatinny gas block that is on the AR-15. (I pulled one off an AR10 and it looked identical. .75 diameter) The AR-10 has an even higher rail on the receiver so it looks even more goofy.

The big question is why the heck didn't the make the AR-15 gasblock the same height as the rail on he receiver of the AR-15. My only guess is that when you add a flip up sight, if it was the same height, most would be so thick when flipped down that they would show up as a minor shadow or protrude enough to potentially snag on something. (Of course free float rail mounted BUIS seem to not be a huge issue.)

Re: Gas block riser?

My main hissy fit is because I would like to use the Diamondhead flip up sights. But in order to do so, I have to buy a $300 plus forearm. I just dont understand why they dont make a bigger gas block, then just use one type of sight for both AR10s and AR15s, thus negating the need to have taller flip sights for us 308 guys. And thus eliminating the need for the industry to make up the gap between the 2 platforms. Rear sight is the same, why not the front? It seems it would be easier mass producing taller gas blocks as opposed to taller sights. Im sure I started thinking too much on this already, but it really bugs me now that I have.

Re: Gas block riser?

I think DPMS makes different sizes because they just changed their uppers, correct? So they have to use a different gas block. It seems like they are trying to become proprietary so you have to buy DPMS everything, or just wanted to be different. I dont know, I have an Armalite.

Re: Gas block riser?

Am I wrong in my "logic"? Im sure some experts here could chime in and educate me as to why they use AR-15 gas blocks on AR-10s and other 308 ARs. Wouldnt it be cheaper to make bigger gas blocks as opposed to specific sights? Is it because of the AWB and not able to make specific new parts or something? I would just like to know.

Re: Gas block riser?

It's just manufacturer laziness. It's not like they have to support sights. They just build rifles. Why make a new design that has to be kept track of, etc, when you can use what's on hand?

Railed gasblocks suck anyways. They're heavy and look fugly. Better solution is if you're going to use the gasblock to mount a sight, just get a gasblock with an integral sight.

Re: Gas block riser?

I do like that sight. I just wish they had a rear sight to match. Something hooded similarly. I have the Diamondhead sights on my AR15 and I love them. Best money ever spent on my rifles. I just wish I could bolt them to my AR10.

Re: Gas block riser?

I checked those out too. I was not sure how sturdy they are. Never handled them or seen them. It doesnt seem like the sights would stay true, how well do they hold in place, do you have personal experience with them? Are they all metal, or what?
