I was wondering on AR-15's what is the best way to set up a gas system?

<span style="text-decoration: underline">I currently have a</span>:
20" bbl setup w/ rifle length gas system (AR carrier: .223)
w/ Magpul PRS stock (rifle length)
18" bbl setup w/ mid-length gas system (M16 carrier: 6.5mm)
w/ Magpul PRS stock (rifle length)
16" bbl setup w/ carbine length system (AR carrier: .223)
w/ Magpul CTR stock (carbine length)
* All have Low Profile gas blocks under Larue rails

I am wondering cuz I want to put a A2 buttstock assy. on my Carbine but will the rifle length buffer assembly work with the carbine length gas system? Im also using a M16 carrier on it now. Whats the difference? I had never had any problems with the way im running it now but want to change the CTR stock and I have a spare A2 assembly I want to put on it but dont know if it will work right with the Carbine (7") gas system.

You can put the A2 stock on as long as you use the longer(rifle) buffer and spring. It shouldn't effect the functionality of the rifle. Most use a M16 carrier for the extra weight to help cycle better.

+1.
Just FYI...on an AR15, the carbine length gas system was really designed for a 12" barrel length. If you have the choice, run a mid length gas system on a 16" barrel. The rifle will run much smoother and it's easier on parts.

Re: Gas length AR-15 mix-up

i run a carbine barrel and gas block under a full length float tube and have ran both carbine collapsible stocks/buffers as well as full length stock with buffer with zero notice of any change in performance.

Re: Gas length AR-15 mix-up

On an AR the gas system length has nothing to do with what buffer system you run.Collapsible length= shorter spring/buffer, full length = full length buffer/spring.Buffer weights are "tuned" to help smoother cycling. That said, you want to use the LONGEST gas system you have room for. They will be smoother and less finicky to powder charges/ burning speed.Try always to use at least a mid length gas system, and rifle length is better yet.

Re: Gas length AR-15 mix-up

There is a company out there that makes a gas tube that looks like a curly-q,it mimics a longer gas tube by wrapping around the barrel to give extra length.Saw one in a catalog a couple of years ago.Anybody else recall seeing one of these?
