Getting to 1000

Good morning,

I am quite sure this question has been asked. I did do a google search and a YouTube search. Along with a search on here on equipment needed to get to 1000 yards. Vortex took a diamondback scope and ruger American predator they didn’t include the bipod.

so here’s my current setup

I own a rangefinder, Bergara HMR 6.5 PRC, 20 moa Seekins scope rail, atlas cal bipod, and haven’t yet to pick out a scope yet.

what else is exactly needed? I did pick up a notebook to write information and stuff down.

You dont need anything really. Get a 100 yard zero so you have a solid reference point and then take it out and shoot at 1k, see where you are missing and dial in your corrections.

1. Last year I bought a Remington 700 5 R with a H&S Precision stock in 6.5 creedmoor with a Timney 2 stage trigger. I took that gun out to 750 yards using the Sterlok pro app. I forgot to mention I do own a chrony and have a simple understand of G1/G7 ballistics

2. not totally sure what you are asking. Reading the wind has always been an heart. I have several notes previous and what it takes to get trees and other things to move in my area. What I have had a hard time completing is when you have multiple winds rather then just one. Which one do you compensate for ?

3. I’m not sure if I know what to do with it or not. For example if I have 58” of drop@ 600 yards. I know that I need to multiply 6x3.6” and get 21.6 I then 58”/21.6 which gives me a MIL holder over of 2.68

Just do what StrelokPro says to do and shoot, make a correction if needed. Your making it hard on yourself , that app tells you what to dial you don't need to multiply anything.

You're correct in that knowing your wind drift/wind speed is one thing, actually trying to understand how much wind is out there and where it comes from is a whole nother thing and software won't tell you that.

Anyway, it's obvious that you know what you're doing. Which leads me to the next question, related to your scope question.

What about the scope on your current rifle don't you like?

Also, if you got to 750 with a 6.5 Creedmoor why didn't you just keep going another 250 yards? The cartridge itself is more than capable.

I bought a hmr in 6.5cm last spring, put a 20 moa scope rail, vortex viper pst gen 2, and a harris bipod on it.

Running factory ammo thru it I got up with a guy with a labradar and got my velocities and out them in the free hornady ballistic app.

First time stretching out ended up with consistent hits from 320-963 yards, which I was happy with since it was the first time ever shooting past 100 yards.

Since then swapped out the harris for an atlas CAL and a trigger tech trigger.

I will add that to my arsenal. I also didn’t like the HS stock couldn’t get a consistent cheek weld but now with the HMR stock I dont think it’ll be an issue. Right now I’m at $500-$1,000.

@308pirate is giving you good advice. I will add a couple of thoughts:

1. Get a note pad, data book, or keep observations in a Notes app on your phone. But you need to record DOPE as you shoot.

2. @lowlight has some great videos on “ballistic vudoo” to get your basic DOPE, and for getting your correction for windage. He uses a set of targets hanging side by side to teach this skill, but watching that video will help you a bunch (search “Sniper’s Hide” or “SHLowlight” on Youtube).

3. There are many threads discussing scopes here on SH, and given your past experience, read and pick a scope.

And before you brain locks up...and you think you can't hit 1000 yards at 16 power....I hit a mile when I go to Thunder Valley with a 15x PST Gen2....a 18" and a 12" plate....no problems...and I'm usually 10-12 power at 1000.

Yea...hard to beat that Steiner for the price.

And before you brain locks up...and you think you can't hit 1000 yards at 16 power....I hit a mile when I go to Thunder Valley with a 15x PST Gen2....a 18" and a 12" plate....no problems...and I'm usually 10-12 power at 1000.

Yea...hard to beat that Steiner for the price.

oh I want a low powered scope preferably 3-15 no more then 18x. Really looking at the 3-15viper

I’m worried that at my budget optical clarity isn’t that good so the higher magnification will be useless or atleast that’s my thought

Don't get hung up on glass....they are all good...better than you think. So you won't be able to make out the jagged edges of paper at 100yds....so you may get a little chromatic distortion....but you won't really even know what that is until it is pointed out. Just get a scope with good turrets that are repeatable so you can run out to 1000 yds and back and they are true. Also....never let anyone convince you that this stuff is hard. If you go into it with the mentality that if anyone else can do it....so can you....you will do it.

Hitting targets at distances where you bullet is still supersonic isn't hard with today's equipment and especially knowledge....the fun begins when you try to stretch that puppy out to where it isn't optimal.

Skip the ballistic calculator, especially new people with nobody to help them. It's too easy to mess up the inputs and have the solution be wrong, then when you shoot, you'll expect the bullet to go where the computer sent it and question everything.

Instead, new shooters with no application in Long-range should use the Weaponized Math, it's less work, just as accurate and uses their actual data.

anyone can use it, any caliber, any scope, no extra data, just get the first number.
