I am going to be getting a new upper for my AR-15. Not sure what I want to get yet. I am going to be shooting 45-55 gr rounds so I am thinking a 1 in 9 twist rate. Any suggestions on that? Also I am going to go with a 16 inch threaded barrel as I have a suppressor that I will be installing on it as well. Think I should go with a slightly longer barrel?

Any suggestions or comments are welcome!

is there something wrong with your current upper? my guess is that has a 1:9 barrel on it. assuming in was not part of the "Brady era" you should be able to take off your birdcage to accommodate the can. If you do build a new upper be sure to look into a "gas-buster" type gas block

1:9 is pretty normal. It will really depend what your intentions are, there are lots of arguments for a faster spin, but with lighter (45gr) projectiles that is not always good.

Re: goin to buy a new complete upper for my AR...

There is nothing wrong with my current upper except the fact that it has a 14.5 inch barrel on it and the flash suppressor on it will not come off due to the short length of the barrel. And instead of just changing out the barrel I am going to just build or buy a new upper for it as apposed to just swapping back and forth between my flash suppressor and my can.

This rifle wont ever be hunted with, its simply for fun/personal protection. So a long distance shot is not something that will be very common with this weapon. Simply put....its just one of my toys

And im not sure what you mean when you say "complete your profile" ???

Re: goin to buy a new complete upper for my AR...

Well, I understand the NFA ramifications of the 14.5" barrel, but that doesn't mean you have to get a new upper (unless you just want one). If your suppressor is not a thread-mount, but uses some sort of QD muzzle device, you can have a permanently installed suppressor adapter/muzzle device installed. You'll pay around $75 or so to have the permanently pinned muzzle device removed and a new suppressor adapter installed and permanently pinned, which will save you several hundred bucks versus a complete upper. That is up to you.

Aside from that...pick an upper and go with it. For shooting 45-55gr bullets, a 1:9 twist will be more than adequate for you. As for barrel length, 16" should be fine for your stated purposes. I'd opt for a mid-length instead of a carbine-length gas system if I were you, but other than that, your options are damn near endless in terms of mfg/brand of upper!

As for your profile, he means the pertinent info like your location, etc. Look underneath your User Name and you'll see that yours is missing that info.

Re: goin to buy a new complete upper for my AR...

that is a pretty damn good idea! Do you know anyone specific that does this? I have never heard of doing this before is why I ask. Is this something that any gunsmith can do?

Get with Steve and the guys at ADCO here:

http://www.adcofirearms.com/

They have done work for me in the past and they offer good prices and relatively quick turn-around (<2wks for a job like that). Also, you may have a smith local to you, but since we don't know where you are, its hard to say?! (i.e. - fill out your profile).

sent out an email to Steve, I hope that he can get back with me quickly. I would like to have this taken care of by the end of next week. Thanks again for the link oh and I updated my profile!

Re: goin to buy a new complete upper for my AR...

Know anybody with a drill press and a welder? It's easy to do, you don't necessarily need a gunsmith to do it. There are even some writeups on it if you look around.

Basically, look closely on your current flash hider, and find the discolored spots on each side where it is pinned and welded. With a die grinder or something cut a slit down each side of the flash hider through the pin, making sure not to cut into the barrel, and then tap a chisel down into it so it splits in half off the barrel.

Then, drill a small hole in the suppressor mount behind the threading. Screw the mount on and drill through that hole into the barrel 1/8" or so, making sure not to go so deep that it penetrates into the bore. Then, cut a piece off of the back side of the drill bit that matches the depth of the hole, tap it in, and put a small tack weld over it. The small piece of drill bit goes through the flash hider and into the barrel and is welded in place, so the flash hider can't be removed without drilling out the pin. Grind the weld flush if you want, and you're done. No big deal.

I do have access to that equipment but I don't see what you are talking about on my barrel/flash suppressor. It looks to be silver solder onto the barrel all the way around not just a pin holding it on. I am getting some pics now and I will upload them shortly so you can see what im talking about

Re: goin to buy a new complete upper for my AR...

Could be, I mentioned the pins because that's the method a lot of factories use. You'll need to use some heat paste to control the heat, and use an acetylene torch to quickly heat the FH and screw it off. I have heard of some people splitting off a silver soldered FH just like they would a pinned one, too.
