Good Load for 300WM

Re: Good Load for 300WM

I just found a kick ass load for my own yesterday.

I'm using win brass, rem 9 1/2m primers, 73.6gr of H1000 under SMK 220gr at .010 off the lands.

It's shooting .26" 5 shot groups consistantly from my rifle with a 26" 1:10 twist bbl. The group goes to hell at 74.0gr and, it shoots about .31" at 73.3gr... then the group goes to hell at 73.0gr.

Think I'm going to shoot this a while... it should stay supersonic to about 1600yds.

I haven't put a crono on it yet but, I'd suspect somewhere between 2820 and 2850fps.

Re: Good Load for 300WM

I think I'm going to work up a load using the 208gr a-max next. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

My 220gr match kings are flying well, however. The only thing about the match kings is that they're expensive.... BUT, you can keep them easily supersonic out to 1600yds.

I am VERY happy with the way my loads are shooting at the moment. I can't wait to take them out to Tac Pro maybe this weekend to let them stretch their 1000yd legs.

Re: Good Load for 300WM

SMK 220gr bullets run .629BC... it's no slouch at ALL. I picked it because based on how you can launch them, in a 1:10bbl, I'm not sure you can get a 208 a-max to stay supersonic farther. ( however, I'm new at loading this round )

I think my next barrel may be a long throated 300wm with maybe 1:9.5 or maybe a 1:9 twist. I'd like to launch the 240gr SMKs a mile supersonic. ( or pretty DAMN close )

Re: Good Load for 300WM

man dude thats crazy I want to get my 300wm done that much more now. hahaha When I was working loads on a jlm calculator I was looking at 180gr SSTs at like 3100FPS went subsonic at something like 1100 yards. so maybe i need to go balls to the walls and load 220s and 240s

Get on JBM and check on the sierra match king 220gr bullet going 2860fps, which is what my last load went. It stays supersonic out to 1580yds at 500ft above sea level. You can REALLY get the 240gr bullets out there. ( a mile is 1760yds )

I'll do that as soon as I get the free time. Just to be sure though what is subsonic speed? as far as i knew its right about 1200 FPS I'm 415ft above sea level

Re: Good Load for 300WM

For long range, BC is king. The 208 A-max (.648 BC) and 210 VLD provide a better BC than the 220 SMK, and you can push them faster. So, these 2 things increase your range.

Look back through several months in the "Beyond 1000 yards" section. There are some good 300WM threads there.

bullet goes subsonic at about 1100fps.

Running some numbers on JBM, I think I really want to work up some loads with the 208 a-max... trouble is that I have about 350-400 220gr SMKs in a bulk box in the garage! LOL

The good news is that they're shooting GREAT! haha

No worries though, I won't have any trouble getting rid of them.

If you have a load that you know shoots in your rifle, I wouldn't necessarily sell them.

A good proof load is really nice to have around for those days when your rifle won't shoot and you think you've lost your mind. It's really nice to be able to go back to something you know works.

I have the same issue with 200g SMK's. Shoot a ragged hole and are sub 1/2 moa for a LOOONG way. Trouble is the 208's DESTROY them at LR. So I keep the SMK's around for practice and proofing.

Just a thought.

Well, it's a good thought. I'm going to shoot every one of them, I believe but, I'm also going to get some of the 208s and shoot some of those and see how that goes.

I'm anxious to shoot a bit this weekend and get some 1000yd dope on the load I have worked up. I know "about" where it's at but, I need exact elevations.

If weather works better, I'm going out to a friend's deer lease, we can set up steel as far as we want. If it does what it's likely to do, I'll try to at least get some time at the 1000yd line at tac pro. I'll bring a box of skeet and see how it works out.

Re: Good Load for 300WM

jwoolf, the 220 SMK is a good bullet. Running the numbers to 1K, the 208/210 will be 2.26 MOA flatter, and have 1/2 MOA less wind drift than the 220. Honestly, we're splitting hairs when comparing the 208/210 to the 220. So, if you have a good load going in the 220, then shoot the heck out of it.
