Advanced Marksmanship Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

So I was playing around with Google Earth today looking for that magical number. I found what the program says to be a straight line distance of 1016.82 yards. The line is shown in the picture below. My question is, what now? Do I have a surveyor come out and put flags out? Do I have them verify the distance? Do I just start cutting down trees and building a tower? Any and all advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. By the way, Mods, if this is in the wrong section I do apologize. Thank you in advance gentlemen. Steve

I would call a surveyor and have him make sure that all points are legit and on your property, and then ask him to flat every 50 yards on that line. Then start clearing it 25 feet on either side of the flags ..... or 3 bucket widths of a 953.

90 an hour is a fair price, depending on what he does with the trees ....

Personally Id make sure the guy has a loader and not just a dozer. Have him fall the trees, then cut the stumps, pile logs in one spot and push the limbs and stumps into a pile to burn. Might take more than 15 hours to do it ... Might can get it done a little quicker if you cut stumps and limbs and all he has to do is run the tractor.

Was planning on selling the logs to a local guy to help offset costs and to help build a shooting tower.

Check regs when cutting near the creek, might be some red tape if you get too close. Might not be a problem but good to find out first, there might be a mandatory buffer zone you are not allowed to disturb. I know the timber companies around here have to deal with that, might be different since its your property. Maybe someone in here has a quick answer.

Good luck man, ought to be nice to have your own place to shoot out to 1,000 yds. Long range doe management will be a bonus to this, have him clear out a few small food plot areas along the path.

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

I was helping a buddy clear lanes and we cut down everything and anything on the creek that we cleared around (its a big one too). No clue if we broke any red tape doing it however

That is a nice piece of land. Good luck with the lane clearing...
Make sure you consider the SDZ behind the 1000 and laterally. Remember, every bullet has a lawyer on it....

+ 1000 on that; make sure any out of bounds round won't hit someone's house or you're up crap creek. I've been there before with a range in Virginia and it ain't pretty. We had to rebuild the whole range to contain any outgoing rounds and it really sucked because it took about a year to get the work done. Shooting at the range really sucked after the rebuild; had to lay and sit on a table to shoot a 100 yard NRA High Power Match. I quit shooting there shortley after that. Just saying check your regs and be carefull of what goes down range.

Depending on tree age, you will need a hell of a dozer to push stumps. Your best bet is to call in an excavator dig them out and pull them up with the bucket and boom. You could offset your costs by having a company come in and say you clear it AND keep the wood. They might give you a hell of a price.

By looking at your map, there is a lot of work to be done with those trees. If you are just making a shooting lane, you dont really need to dig up stumps. Drill the centers out and you have yourself a nice target base...

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

I did the same thing with Google Earth and found that if you hover over the area it will tell the elevation. Mine is down a natural gas pipeline and I am going to build an eight foot tower to take advantage of it. I would have never found it without Google Earth.

I hate you. In a polite wish you found this somewhere in San Diego kind of hate you.

I think the next best thing is to have it surveyed and verified. Make sure it is your property to work with....then like C_bass16 said, hand out the power tools and beer and see what happens. Just a little jealous though....not gonna lie about it.

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

Rent a Bobcat and tree shear. The tree shears cut up to a 16" tree in about 7 or 9 second and then you can push them into burn piles. There is no ground disturbance like when you push them over with a dozer. Also, it is much more productive to use a large excavaor than a dozer to push over trees.

PM me if you want some specifics and to know where to go.

Missouri sounds like an interesting place to build a range. Just curious, how do the circled properties come into play? Not an issue?

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

You shouldn't need a surveyor to cut that line. Those guys ain't cheap. I've cut lines through heavy woods using a transit by myself by working further and further out. A lot easier with two people.

Hire the biggest dozer you can find. Might cost more per hour but'll do the job cheaper (given a competent operator). Also wait till the ground is a bit damper, those trees will go over easier. It's real hard pushing here right now.

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

what are the trees??? I would call a logger! get paid for your crop. if they are worth cutting the income would be great plus it might help on your property taxes being Agricultural land assuming you are not involved in Ag already. If its just brush call the dozer and pay the $90 an Hour. make piles for cover and plant warm season grasses for the quail rabbits turkey and deer. you might contact your local Extension agent for advice and you might get some help from your local Soil and Water Conservation District for the seeding and wildlife habitat.

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

I agree try a logging company first they will clear em and pay you to do it, might cover your costs of dozen the leftovers and them some. Good luck

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

You're going to have a 50ft buffer (minimum) where the ground can't be disturbed around that creek if the DNR is aware of the clearing. If it's a wetland area, it's 150ft minimum.

You could hire a shin grinder (excavator with a grinder head in place of the bucket) to take the trees down. Much faster than a dozer, minimal ground disurbance, no holes from the stumps being pulled, the entire cleared area gets mulched at the same time, and no piles of scrub brush to get rid of. We used them for clearing right of ways for sewer lines. A competent operator could clear that in no time flat.

ETA: You can file for permits to clear up to the creeks edge, but it's a MAJOR pain in the ass. DNR is the devil.

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

Rather than doing a diagonal range, I would suggest doing a 900 yard range in the center of your property and you will have plenty of room for a berm and perhaps even a second, shorter berm in front of it with retracting target/s so you can have a puller and have each shot scored like in a match.

I also agree that a logger should be hired to remove the trees and he would do all the work. You may ask him to remove the stumps and take them away as well so that all you have to do afterwards is come in with a dozer and clean it up. This way you may get less money for your logs, but will come out ahead in the end as the loggers have all the equipment to handle this project. While he is cutting, you can be building your berm. Make sure the berm is at least 4 times higher than your target and at least 5 times wider, if not more, regardless of how good a shot you are. Oh, and you will be surprised at the amount of dirt needed to build a good sized berm!

Finally, be sure and consult the NRA range information for building ranges and comply with all laws.

Re: Google Earth says i have 1016.82 yards...Now what?

Looks like it would be pretty nice. Guy I work with has an 800 yard range now. We did the same with Google Earth and with a tower and clearing a couple draws and pushing back a few trees, he could get about 1200 yards. He had mentioned maybe starting late this summer or early fall, depending on what they do with their CRP contract.

Good luck with your range!
