It looks like I might be emigrating from Cucknadia to the grand ol’ US of A.
Having issues with management in my office, and the North American headquarters is willing to relocate me anywhere I want to go to keep me with the company. They appreciate what I bring to the table more than my new (2.5 year tenure), hipster, liberal, bong ripping, burn out, brown shirt manager. Anytime I’ve come to HO, it’s been to a hero’s welcome. Who wouldn’t want to show up to a place they’re appreciated everyday? A move to the US opens up a lot more opportunity for growth within the company, and that’s an advantage for not just me, but my whole family.
Even if everything at work did a complete 180°, my country is still swirling the drain of full blown communism. The idea of staying and fighting for what’s right seems noble, but is a guarteed losing battle. I’m already in a legal battle with the government who will just try to backrupt me, over a now, “prohibited” stripped lower. Sometimes you just have to admit defeat I guess.

Hell yes, come on down ! :)(y)(y)(y)

Friendly piece of advice; Do your homework on where to live/housing costs and negotiate a salary appropriately. Also, seek knowledge of the dual tax system that you will be entering into. Being a Yank who resided (still do) in Warshington state, I commuted to Vancouver every day for work. My taxes were deducted (and kept) by Revenue Canada and I got a $ for $ credit on my US taxes. However, I can't speak to going the other direction.

I have A LOT of homework to do, but if this move happens, I won’t simply be living and working the US. I’ll be becoming a citizen.
Looking in the Greater Cinncintanti/Northern Kentucky area.

I have no legal knowledge or expertise, but you can become a Dual (why renounce your Cdn citizenship, unless for some reason you want to (?...)). I suppose that if you become a US citizen, then renounce, Canada would have no further claim to income taxes. But, you'd likely forfeit all contributions you've made to SI/RRSP's, etc. Not much upside in doing that. Oh, and beware of any possible exit taxes from Canada for assets/real property, etc.

Just find a good International Tax guy and have the conversation with him/her, they'll know the in's and out's.

    Thank you for clarifying.

Kentucky...is just about a 3rd world country. I remember wanting to go hiking there and my Uncle, who was a tunnel rat in Vietnam for SF, said if you go into them hills boy you ain't coming back.

I'll hit it the other way - I'd head straight for Idaho or Montana right now. Idaho has better weather, Montana has more mountains.

Most of our cities aren't as nice as a similar Canadian city. Crappy services, crappy people, crappy politics. Imagine if you had every single downside of socialism and absolutely 0 of the upsides.

    BS.

While I agree with most of yuor post Ive been all over the Kentucky hills and never had a problem. Just be polite and careful no to get too close to Bubba's still (or today cannabis patch) and you'll be fine.

Heh. in the Hyden area all the weed places have tripwires and 12 gauge zip guns setup.

First time I ever got seriously lit up with a gun it was stumbling across one of those weed patches. Maybe it’s less serious now 30 years later.

So for me at least my statement stands. Backcountry of KY can be downright dangerous.

No dual tax system, Canada only charges income tax if you are a resident or work there, only US taxes here. The US charges if you are a citizen and work in any country. I have dual citizenship and only pay US taxes. OP PM me on things that are good to know moving to the US from Canada. Moved here from Montreal 20 years ago and never looked back.

Used to be, Claremont County, OH had plenty of hicks & farms, but still close to the city if you need to. Might be overrun by sprawl now...

Another suggestion would be to put an apartment on a barge in the river in Newport. Maybe start a small jazz based radio station there...

Man come on down! We’d be lucky to have you. I’d look into a dual citizenship. I’ve known plenty to do this, unless you just hellbent on not being Canadian.

As far as the fight against full blown communism, I’m not sure we are much better off here. Maybe a few years behind you but it’s spreading like wildfire it seems and there ain’t anyone doing anything about it so...

Cincy was a shithole when I last saw it. Sounds like they gentrified a bit, but any city with ghetto-not so much for me. Heading south towards Lexington-lotta green rolling hills, horse ranches and farms; was pretty nice IMO.

May be worth considering SE Indiana as Cincy is right on the border there. Only passed thru that area a couple times but seems their laws may offer a possibility if you like the area.

    Welcome-and good luck to OP.

Tokay, I get what you're saying, and doing.

I'm not quite at the point of giving-up though. I've been a staunch Conservative supporter/contributor for a lot of years. But this latest abomination that is now "LIEberal Lite" is a complete gong-show.

So it seems that I'm leaning towards ten-thousand percent support for Wexit... wherein the Manitoba/Ontario border is the 'split' line and we form our own country/taxes/laws/military,,,, everything.

Absolutely TO HELL with paying queeerbec any 'yearly payments' anymore, ever! As far as we're concerned, cut that province (or half of the country) off and set it adrift into the Northern Atlantic.

The vast majority of true Canadians live in the West. And have been ignored/under-represented by those in the East.

No, this is not a 'political' post, this is a geographical post. And one that uses and includes logic. And hope. And stamina.

Skip the eastern half of the US and every coastal state of the west. .

Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, or Wyoming. Those should be the states you're looking at. It's the last home of true conservative self-reliant thinking... and they don't have cities big enough to destroy the rest of the state. (yet. Hopefully not ever.)

There is plenty of open space in KY and OH. In OH I would consider being closer to Dublin than Cincy unless that is where the job is.

I’ve gotta stay close to the Northern KY/GCA. At least initially.
I’d love to go straight to Utah, but it isn’t feasible.

KY is God's gift to the 2nd Amendment. Gun friendly, constitutional carry, suppressor / machine gun friendly, pretty low taxes, pretty country, great ( trophy class ) whitetail and elk hunting, variety of small game and bird hunting. 10 times better than Ohio.

The only part that can be "clan-ish" is the extreme rural eastern part - and the rumors and stereotypes are far more exaggerated than the reality. Except for the marijuana patches - stay out of the marijuana patches. ;)

Utah is honestly awful. Listen to Orkan. He knows what he is talking about. The difference between those good states and Utah is that Utah has SLC, and having a big city ruins a state in no time.

Marijuana patches = Land between the lakes. Near Ft Campbell.

That shit is fertile ground-just saying.

Coal miners in the East - not so hard to work with.

I’m in N Ky, if possible stay out of the Natt, it’s a mini Chicago. Boone co, is the fastest growing county in Ky, Amazon is building a giant shipping facility here, international airport here also. All the local sheriffs have put out statements that they will NOT enforce any of Biden’s anti gun laws. CCDW permits are a SHALL issue license good in 39 sates and if you have one you can bypass being called in to nics for purchasing guns. Very laid back area.

I always wished Kentucky had trees. Instead, it has green ticks and chiggers standing in formation on the skeletons of the unwary.

You walk by, they strip you down to the meat and toss your bones on the pile.

KY certainly has ticks and chiggers. In the 30+ years I've lived here, I've gotten plenty of chiggers, but lucky me, never a tick. Just about everyone else I know has had ticks though.

Plenty of trees around me though. When driving on I-64 for example, there are numerous horse farms, and they don't have trees. A lot of the bourbon distilleries don't have any trees around, or around the aging barns (we have more bourbon barrels than we have people).
