I have a garmin handheld Etrex and it does what I want for the field. I am looking at getting a GPS for the car and after a little research the Garmin Nuvi 500 looks like it has what I want. http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-nüvi-3...id=1339601614&sr=1-1&keywords=nuvi+500+garmin

I am looking for a unit that also has topo maps, as I want to get to those spots out in the mountains using USFS roads and small county access for hunting. Also out in Southeast CO you can find yourself hundreds of miles away from the closest gas station.

Do any of you have the Nuvi 500 or similar, is there another that has better topo maps? I heard the Nuvi has 1:100K topo but 1:24K are available.

I've got 2 of the Garmin NUVI 1450LMT units ..they are dead nuts on !
There are 24K TOPO maps availible as upgrades ...they are almost what I paid for the GPS units themselves

Cool, I am glad I asked. I already have the 24k maps for my area so that unit will save me some cash. The 500 has a smaller screen but is designed to get you to the trail and then take it out as a hand held. I already have a handheld so the 5" screen 0f the 1450 will be a bonus.

Re: GPS for auto use

I have these in wifes car and my work truck ,I really am pleased , they work alot better than a few others we tried , also have the lifetime map upgrade on this model , It says it is portable but I have not taken it out and actually seen how long it will go on battery power alone .
