Thinking about getting / built 6.5 grendal upper for M-P AR15. What kinda $$ should i expect to shell out? Looking for a complete upper high quality barrel wanting a real shooter. We shoot out to 500 regulary sum times 750 an alot grouping at a100 matching handloads. This will also be my new hunting gun any advice is apperciated.

You can get a great upper from AA that'll meet your needs for under 1k. If you want a top of the line sub 1/2 MOA complete upper you should check out Precision Firearms. The upper will run you over 1k though. I've got one well worth it.

Get a quality barrel and build your own.youl save up to few hundreds by doing it..satern barrel are great if you can find tgem without waiting 8 months..if you want to buy complete AA or 264 lbc will serve you well..

I was talking with the guy at Percision Arms just yestereday. They seem like they no there stuff. He thru so much info at me he had head spinning. 1/2 " moa is what im after and we were talking kreiger barrels maybe going with 24" fluted..Im not new to shooting but i am new to the AR 15 systems. Im trying to take full advantage the versitilty. Going to sell a bolt gun or two. I would like to build my own but i dont no enough about these black guns to do so or have the tools. Do i need to go the krieger route or are there other barrels out there that will get me there? I'll look in to the satern

Not a Grendel expert by any means. But I think you will be better served with an 18" Barrel. Personally I wouldn't go past 20". You may want to checkout the 6.5G forum. A lot of very good info over there. I have spent more time reading up on the Grendel then shooting mine so far. I need to start reloading my brass seeing I can't find anymore factory Hornady .123gr A-Max.

OP: What part of the country are you in, and what elevations do you normally shoot at? You can build one starting with a Lilja barrel, as it is now a normal product that you can order from Lilja in different contours. We did a group buy on the Grendel Forum, and Lilja just finished and shipped a run of over 80 barrels.

If you don't want to build it yourself, Alexander Arms, Precision Firearms, and JP enterprises would be where I would start.

If you build and are looking for that accuracy, start with a top notch upper receiver with a square face (Seekins, Mega, Precision Firearms), get a top notch barrel from Lilja, Krieger, Bartlein, Les Baer, etc. and assemble the upper. There are some assembly techniques that will tighten up accuracy, but the top-name billet receiver makers have already taken care of a lot of that for you.

Since you want to hunt with the AR15 also, I would take the following considerations into account before you select the barrel length:

* Your height/weight/build
* The type of hunting scenarios you will find yourself in (tree stand, varmint/bench, stalking)
* Will family members or friends be shooting the rifle?

If you are a beast of a human being left over from the giant race that tormented mankind, then barrel length won't be a big issue for you, especially if you are shooting varmints or from a tree stand.

If you are stalking through the woods, and have kids or smaller-framed family members that will also enjoy hunting with you, then you might want to consider the 18" barrel. I have 2 18" barrels and 2 16" barrels for my Grendel's, and I have gotten amazing performance from my AA 16" barrel so far, easily pushing the 1234gr A-MAX into the 2550fps range, which is more like 20-24" velocity. I achieved this with CFE and loading out to 2.275", working up a pressure ladder with CFE. I actually got much farther than 2550fps, but I am more comfortable keeping the pressures lower and staying in an accuracy node.

Lilja barrels just started carrying drop-in Grendel pipes this month, after such a huge response from the group buy we did: Lilja Precision Rifle Barrels

They are some of the best looking AR15 drop-in barrels I have ever seen, if not the best, and I've been shooting and working with AR15's since 1988 regularly.

LRRFP52 thanks for the advice unfortuntely i live the $§¡t hole state of MD. Figuring Elavation will be new to me in shooting. Weight realy isnt a issue im 6'2 250 (mason by trade )most of my guns are heavy barrels. Im hoping for mid weight setup tho. As for the type of huntin i do its pretty much all you have mention. At the farm here i stretch out to 300-500 yds regulary or my lease on the shore is all wooded close quaters. Even been know to shoot from farm to farm to reach a 1000 using 5 gallon buckets for targets but not alot. Varmints i plan on retiering my 22-250 an sell it and go with a dedicated 223 upper not saying my grendal might not smoke a few here and there. Nice thing is we have a 50-500 yd range on the property (md hasnt tax us on that yet but im sure its coming) barrel lenght is defently something im unsure of ive been reading as much as possible getting different opions with mixed results.

If you will be the main shooter, then I would recommend a 20-24" barrel, with a medium contour, maybe even fluted or Lilja's WASP contour. JP uses the same contour, with a very lightweight profile under the handguards of .650". Barrel steel quality, combined with seasoned barrel-making methods will result in a very accurate pipe.

If you use a carbon fiber handguard, you can get away with more weight on the barrel, and balance it with the buttstock. One of the most well-balanced guns I've ever felt is a 28" AA with the G10 carbon fiber handguard and Magpul PRS, even though I would have thought it would be a pig.

I'm getting very nice results with my 16" AA barrel (123gr A-MAX at 2550fps using CFE, factory 123gr A-MAX is 2470fps), and it is meant to be a compact, lightweight DMC/hunter carbine.

Here's a 20" with the 15" G10 AA handguard, and it's a very well balanced, medium weight gun. The owner is at least 6'4" and 250lbs or more. It looks like a little carbine in his hands. His 28" Grendel I described earlier fits him well.
