BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Several hundred people gathered on the LSU campus today and effectively stopped an LSU grad student from burning an American flag on campus.

The student announced Tuesday that he intended to burn the flag. The announcement set off a wave of angry protests on Facebook and talk radio stations.

As the student approached the Parade Grounds at LSU Wednesday, students chanted "USA! USA!". One man yelled "My brothers died for you!".

Several people tossed water balloons and water bottles at the man. The graduate student was then escorted away by LSU Police. The flag burning did not occur.

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

Go Tigers!! Let it be known these anti American freaks aren't welcome in the South!!!

He got off easy with water balloons, if he'd have lit our flag they would have been hauling him off in an ambulance or hearse!!!

You are entitled to your first amendment guaranteed rights, and we're entitled to shove it up ur ass too!!!

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

Too bad the cops couldn't leave this douche to fend for himself against the angry mob.

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

Wonder if he's gonna be safe walking around campus after they let him go.....

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

How bout a little justice for the scumbag admin pukes that gave permission for the hippie student to torch the colors!

I live not 10 minutes from Campus. If there were no security, that mother fucker would have been shot before even getting within 50 yards of they memorial..

Many people do not know that LSU Tigers, well Tigers is derived from an old civil war regiment. LSU also used to be a military school just like Texas A&M and that the flag at the parade grounds is a memorial to all those that served and currently serve under the flag.

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

Not shocked about commie bastards at universities, but I'm definately shocked that there wasn't a little "Southern Justice" meted out on the spot.

That woulda been an epic ass beating...

I like the quote from NOLA.com:

When Haas finally arrived to a chaotic scene, he was surrounded by a large crowd yelling obscenities and chanting, "U-S-A" and "Go to hell hippie, go to hell."

Back story is that on the day UBL was killed, someone took down the Colors at the war memorial and burned them. It wasn't gonna happen again.......

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

I am PROUD of my LSU TIGERS!!!

You do have a right to freedom of speech. It does not, however, exempt you from the consequences of that speech.

That fella had better start hunting him another place to finish grad school. He may end up being invited on a little fishing trip to the swamp.

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

You guys amaze me.

He wants to exercise his First Amendment rights and you think he should get his ass kicked for it, but you want to exercise your Second Amendment rights and everyone should leave you alone because... it's your right to do so?

Sorry guys, but here's what should have happened at LSU: Everyone sees the guy as the moron that he is, and they walk away and ignore him. No story, no press coverage... he's relegated to the inconsequential dipshit bin.

You cannot claim to be a true American while advocating that we violate our Constitution. We must defend our Constitution, even when it hurts to do so.

So you advocate for burning the flag?

Last I checked the Constitution keeps the GOV from infringing on our rights. It has nothing to do with a protest by the citizens.

Good stuff , anyone who burns the flag of a country he is in as a guest or a citizen of should be arrested . He wants to watch his back and his front and every other part .
No one has the right to destroy what so many have died and suffered to protect , the question is who in the LSU campus put him up to it or condoned it .

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

What most folks don't know is that Admin has to issue permits for any demonstrations (peaceful) They also knew that there is a no burn statue in effect in Baton Rouge.

They cannot arrest him for his intent. But they knew the minute he lit the flag he would be arrested and charged and he was!!!

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

Hey, with great freedom comes great responsibility. You have the right to free speech, but you have to be a responsible steward of that right. That guy was being an asshole and was called out on it.

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

+ one on that comment Powder Burns; too bad the LSU students didn't set his sorry ass on fire!

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

I say go ahead and burn that flag if you so desire. America truely is the land of political and religious freedom; do whatever you want to do. However, you'd better be prepared to deal with a bunch of really pissed off veterans and Americans when you're done.

Sometimes there is just a time when people need to get a good asswhooping! This isn't the government infringing on his rights this is about proud Americans voicing their opposition to him being a shithead in various ways.

You burn the flag and you have now went and burnt the constitution which people fought for that just as they fight for the flag.

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

If taxpayer funded art such as crucifixes submerged in jars of urine, or fecal deposits on illustrations of the Virgin, constitute protected free speech, then so too is creative dental rearrangement as offered to those who choose to burn our beloved colors in venues that are likely to engender said free artistic dental expression, by people generous enough to offer it.

At no cost to the taxpayer!

After all, given the upside down world in which we currently reside, who in all honesty can unequivocally refute that breaking the jaw of Pyro, the flag burner, is not also free speech?

Re: Guess LSU isnt the place to burn the Flag

GEAUX TIGERS!!!! (Sorry about the all caps but it is called for here)

LSU has a tradition of patriotism and open political debate as referenced in some of the above comments, in fact, during my time there a specific area of campus was set aside for open debate one day a week. It was known as Free Speech Alley and there was a bench which served as a literal soapbox to stand above the crowd and voice an opinion/stimulate debate. It was a sound and very American place to be. Many students got up and voiced ideas that went well against my views but I never saw anyone do anything as disrespectful or stupid as what this ass tried. There is a time and a place to exercise your First Amendment rights but to intentionally insult others is an unspeakable act. That guy needs to drop out of school and join that cult that pickets soldiers funerals. They belong together. For a little history, years back a liberal state senator introduced a bill to protect the rights of flag burners from arrest. Another state senator promptly introduced a bill making assault and battery upon a flag burner a minor misdemeanor punishable by a written ticket. The planned flag burning in support of the first Senator's bill never occurred.
