I am having a moisture problem in my gun safe. In the safe, I have a golden rod on the floor and a large container of silica beads (the kind you bake the moisture out of)on the top self. It seems as if I just can not keep the moisture out. What can I do to help this problem?

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

I have an Eva-dry that seems to work well. I was going to get a
Goldenrod but some say it makes no sense to keep getting more cold damp air into the safe. Thought worked for me. I'll try and keep the air inside as dry as possible.

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

Got a buddy that has a goldenrod in his, seems to work ok for him and his safe is in a damp basement,
Chad what you said seems ti make sense though,

I am in the same boat, My safe is in a detached garage that is not heated, not to bad during the winter, but the summer is hell on my guns!

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

is your safe inside your home or outside like in a garage? I live in GA and even with a golden rod and silica I had to move it from the garage to the house(wife loved that but oh well) and the problem stopped.

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

When I lived in Houston, I got rid of the golden rod, all it did was make my safe warm. I had multiple silica gel containers, including one massive one that was 6" by 3" by 5" holds a ton of gel. you need to bake them back to usefulness periodically. the moister the environment, the more frequently you need to "re-set" the gel.

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

My safe is in my basement. The basement is finished, but apparently has more moisture that I thought. I want to put a dehumidifier down there, I think this will help considerably because I open my safe often.

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

My safes are in the basement also. I have found through trial and error that keeping them off the ground will help a lot. Basically I built a platform of treated 4x4 and plywood and bolted the safes to that. Additionally I use golden rods and the basement has a dehumidifier that I keep set at 50%.

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

I live in Houston also, my safe is a large one, so I run a golden rod in each of the 3 bottom area's and run 1 in the top shelf. I don't have a bit of problem. It might be overkill, but Houston is terrible for humidity and I HATE rust.

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

When you are dealing with humidity, just because you cannot see it, it does not mean that there is a small amount there. It actually involves much more water than people realize.

For example, a regular dehumidifier would remove 50 to 70 pts of water every 24 hours – that is 6 to 9 gallons of water every day, day in and day out, and that does not mean it is removing all the water, just enough to lower it to some reasonable level like 50% humidity in a few days to weeks. A constant leakage from outside air our ground will quickly replenish this.

This is why trying to “fight” this moisture problem with a very limited supply of drying agent in a safe that is not sealed air tight is a loosing battle. Put the safe inside a room in the house, basement is best, and put a good dehumidifier in there and you will be GTG.

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

follow-up on my earlier post. If you are truly concerned with the level of humidity in the safe, then you need to get a hygrometer or other device that measures humidity, and put it in the safe. I had two types, one that was color based, and one that I took from my cigar humidor that was digital. With my combination of gels and vapor phase inhibitors, I had humidity down to 25% and inert gas in the safe that kept surface corrosion at bay. I also had them in my cabinets and drawers in the garage.

its not something that you can simply throw in the back of the safe and forget about. The gel needs re-set periodically. Its a simple concept; the more you open the safe the more frequently you need to do it.

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

I have my safe in my garage in South Florida. The garage is not airconditioned. I would like to put it in the house, but there is NO room. I use a goldenrod on the bottom shelf, and I have 3 Eva-Dry units on the other shelfs. Normally I have to recharge the Eva-Dry units every few weeks. I try to shoot once a month so when I open the safe i check the color of the units.

So far everything has been fine, except a Remington 700 that picked up a little surface rust. I had that gun cera-koted and so far so good. I have an older Sig pistol, which are known as rust magnets and so far it is fine too.

One day, I'll get a bigger house and move the safe into it's own room...

Re: Gun Safe Moisture Problem

I bought a small electric dehumidifier and stuck it in my safe. Its reservoir holds about 2 cups. It needs to be emptied every 2-3 days in the summer when its ~90° and 80% RH. It totally fixed my guns-getting-orange freckles problem. When you open the safe, you can smell/feel the dryness of the air in there.
