If you wanted to put a gun in long term storage,in an area where temperature and humidity might vary greatly, and had most anything you needed to do this, how would you do it? Keep in mind that it will not be opened for a long time, so I would think that a safe would not be the way to do it.
Plastic baggy? Metal box? Plastic box?
With or without desiccant?

Re: gun storage

I have a collectors pistols left to me by my great grandmother that has been in storage for about 8 years now. I cleaned and degrease it, lubed it with 3 in 1, and sealed it with a food saver type vacuum sealer. I see no rust or discoloration. I have also found vacuum sealers to be effective for storing ammo.

For example, these have been stored for about 4 years now.
As you can see, they are as bright and shiny as the day they were sealed.

I have used the "Food Saver" vacuum bags also. It works really well. I have some ammo I put up in the mid 1990s that I open a small bag every now and then for testing.

For longer term storage of guns I know I'm not going to be shooting, I clean them well, inside and out. Spray 2 coats of this:

on the metal parts and let it dry. Then get your wife's Saran wrap and tear off a piece about a foot longer than the weapon you are putting in storage. I roll it up mashing the air out as I go. The cosmoline spray is kind of sticky. So use caution when you start. I also put a couple of cleaning patches over the front and rear sites, hammer and on sharp edges so it doesn't rip or tear the thin wrap.

I have an old 1880s wire barrel shotgun put up like this that I take out to show off every now and then. It's been like this since the late 1970s. It still looks like it did when I put it up.

One never can tell how far I'll go to satisfy the compulsion on any given day. I might have

In truth, they just store better that way. I can get over 4k 40s in a 50cal ammo can when I package that way. With very little wasted space. You need to eat your Wheaties to move one around.
