The bastards are at it . Went to the show here , Rock Springs WY , which is the suck of gunshows . I go to look for that Redfield scope for my retro M40 or an Unertel to buy . ANY WHO.......... I see 2 Glock G18 mags for 25 a hit , I have 3 already and love them , I dont buy shit to resale and make a killing on . I keep my stuff and use it .

So , I see prices are FAIR on FedGM primers , I'll get 2K sat . I then notice a shit pot of Glock mags at one table , COOL , I need to grab a few G17 mags , OHH hes got 3 G18 mags (33 rds ) I grab 4 17 and ask how much for the G18 mags ..........................................get this , ...$79.00 a pop and , 45 for the 17 mags .....I say " WHAT ?? for real ?? , why " .

He tells me , " they are going to be banned NEXT week . " OOHHHHH REALLLLY , says I . Wanna buy these 2 for 40 bucks a piece ??? ( I would not have sold them as I want them )

" NO , he says , I have 10 more "

I could not stop myself and began a short but LOUD rant . NOW , I don't begrudge a man a fair profit , nor do I buy from an GOUGER no matter how bad I want/need something .

Was i wrong ?? I feel better as the gougers piss me off , they pray on the stupid and ill informed , people just starting out who need our help to get going with the right tools and attitude .

YES, you were wrong. Its not price gouging if it is something that is not needed. So the guy is a low life trying to take advantage of folks not in the know....but it is not up to you to make a scene. I would have politely declined his offer of 80 bucks each and moved on.

I disagree, if it was a simple case of overpriced merchandise, then I too would have simply voiced my disapproval and walked on. But the bullshit story about "they are gonna be banned next week" would have drawn a similar response from me. That's one thing I cannot stand; slimy fucks trying to hustle people out of their money. And there is no room for dishonesty in the firearms trade.

It happens to me at every single local gunshow that I attend (those within 40mi of me...which are few and far between these days because I just don't attend due to the lack of good product and crap prices combined with jackasses like the guy you encountered).

Was the guy a jerk? Yes. Is he praying on stupid people, fear-mongering, or otherwise engaging in unethical sales/pricing practices? Yes on all counts. Did you go too far? Yes, you probably took it too far, and the language was definitely overboard (usually there are families/kids around at my local shows that don't need to hear that crap), although I understand that sometimes it feels good to get stuff off your chest.

The better approach would have simply been to laugh at him (idiots like that HATE IT when you laugh at them), tell him that he has no idea what he's talking about, and calmly/quietly move on to the next table/vendor. A foul-mouthed rant is wasted on a person like that anyway because in their mind, you are just some loud, obnoxious jerk who is clueless about everything under the sun AND they are ALWAYS right. The best thing that can happen to people like that is for them to go belly-up in business after people figure out their crappy, unethical sales/pricing practices. However, if the sheeple are too gullible or uneducated (as comsumers or otherwise) and they pay his prices, that is THEIR FAULT, not the seller's. Welcome to a free-market economy (and the general rule, not the exception, at many small-town gun shows).

With that said,there were plenty of price gougers during the Obama scare,and it looks like history is repeating itself for the Tucson shootings.There were a few Companies that held the line on prices and did not raise them one cent,when they were sold out,they were sold out.AIM Surplus comes to mind as one of the good guys.

I wouldn't mind seeing a thread on the Good Guys that are not going to try and Rape us on this next Go Round.

Must have been Kid's first gunshow. I see over priced gun gear/parts/ammo all the time. Democrats 'siezed' congress. Obama 'stole' the White House. Some left wing crank has a bill collecting dust in committee.

Always a good reason to fear for our weapons. Gun forums have long diatribes on the subject. The slightest sign, real or imagined, gets a huge amount of bandwidth decrying all the evile gungrabbers as well as the rote response of what would if they tried to take the poster's weapons.

Its a capitalist system, something is worth whatever a suck-ahhh consumer is willing to pay that day. Dont like the price, move on. Capitalism upsets you, move to another country or try decaf and remember there are many DINK posers who would love to pay through the nose to have the cool black tacti-cool stuff.

Best I can say to the OP is a fool and his money are soon parted and at least you kept your money even if you lost your cool.

Theres an old man who sells reloading supply's that is at most of our shows , great fellow , during the Obama scare his prices were sane , yea primers were scarce and he could have charged more but he didn't , and sold his stock every weekend . He went outa his way to find me some 208's , yea 2 boxes is all , but he called and said he would bring them to the next show for me . He's about a buck more a pound on powder , but I buy from him , rather than the local shop's . Why ?? because he's honest and EARNED my bizznus .

I paid the price in '96 for 10 AR mags , just so I could have a decent load-out . I know the game and am pretty sick of douche bags trying to screw people .

Yea, every body should just STFU and walk away . THAT is doing nothing but CONDONING the BS . Which is what is wrong with our country today .

Not sure why you consider 'letting' business men make money is whats wrong with this country. Setting price controls seems so socialist. Like demanding gold sellers hold at 800 an ounce and quit playing on investor fears. Or like demanding healthcare price increases hold to the rate of inflation.

If I understand capitalism correctly its what the market will bear and every man is free to name his own price. If I dont like the price of a truck at one dealer and another can work with my price, the second dealer gets my money. If someone else doesnt shop around and has no idea what the going rate is...

Besides we both know 'deals' are few and far between at most gunshows. Sad but nothing to get hot over, it is after all capitalism.

Last time I went 5 or 6 years ago there was lots of crappy chinese optics, old timer stuff, Plaster books and other arcane knowledges like how to revenge your neighbors with various underhanded methods, tree bark cookbooks, beanie babies, and overpriced junk.

Quite a spectacle.

Good peoplewatching though.

I've gotten turned off of gunshows. Seems like everything is way overpriced. I used to be able to find at least 1 or 2 good deals on something every time, but now they seem to be full of junk and the vendors want way to much money. I find myself laughing at them and saying "yeah right" as I walk away.

I just went to my first gunshow in probably 10 year a few weeks ago... I felt like I got raped for paying $9 to get in the door, was out in less than an hour.

But I didn't even cuss the guy that had a YHM 556 suppressor on a bone stock DPMS 20" w/ a carry handle mount and a BSA mildot scope, selling it for $3900, and calling it "the same rifle that green berets use"

I just offer them what I think is a "fair value" and when they say no I move on... One time though I just had some amazing d bag in all mall ninja gear ask me if I was retarded. So I went out, boiught the same item at a local gun shop, went back and told him someone down the line was selling it for what I was willing to pay. Watched him run around to other vendors, and laughed my ass off.

Sounds like gunshows are pretty much the same. lots and lots of BSA, NC star, old ammo, Beef Jerky, toys, books, militaria. i stopped going a few years back.

I went to my first in probably 15 years a couple months ago. And yep, It reminded me why I quit going to them in the first place.

I go about twice a year because they tend to have that hidden nugget.

Most of the stuff is garbage, and most of the salesmen sell snake oil, but every once in a while there is the hidden gem.

I realized quickly that there is no such thing as a quality optic for sale at a gun show, and that I'll have to suffer a whole shit load of racist garbage and peddlers of political nonsense, but that nugget is often worth it.

Gun shows are a different setting - that is for sure. My dad worked security (LEO at the time) at two shows that came around every year. On day one of the show everything was about retail + 50-100%. If the small time guys hadn't sold anything and needed gas money they would try to play the pity card and make like they were selling you something for a steal when really it was still at retail. Only good deals I saw were between dealers after hours on big ticket items. Did get to see some cool stuff though that you usually don't see in a small town setting. One guy brought in the first Winchester 1873 that left the factory. Was shopping it around for big bucks. Guy had papers and such - dad thought it was authentic, which I made note of because he was a pretty hardened skeptic on that type of stuff. Needless to say, over the years, a lot of looking, and very little buying.

the $9 fee to get in is worth it to me. It's people watching at its finest. I also like to walk around and let the vendors give me the whole speech about how "this Ncstar scope is top quality". Then I usually ask if I can give it a drop test and watch them freak out and grab the cheap ass scope out of my hands.

When I lived in Kali, the gun shows sucked big time. More jewelery, beanie babies, air soft crap than gun related items. At the Cow Palace, one of their larger shows, it was about $15 for parking and entrance fee.

Then I moved to Texas. The gun shows out here have opened my eyes as to what is actually for sale to the public. The prices are still over retail and no one sells reloading components, but at least most tables have gun related parts on them.

Also in Kali, you almost never see black rifles and parts, here in Texas, you get bored at gun shows because most everyone sell black rifle parts.

I do love Texas, and really hate the peoples republic of Kalifornistan.
