Anyone know where to find a very sturdy magnifying lamp? It seems like all of the ones that Staples, Office Max, etc. are cheap garbage. I need something that will stay in place. Very useful piece when working with small screws etc.

Lot of money but it's worth it in the long run. I have 2 of the office max lamps and ended up buying one from Rutland for a couple hundred because the plastic lamps and lenses are crap.

I went to an office supply store that deals in salvage items along with new merchandise. I found a lamp that is tank-tough and uses two florescent bulbs. I got it for $30 and it has done well for me.

I have a Dazor that's about 20 years old. The mag lens is glass, not plastic.
Don't know if the new ones are as good, but Dazor was the drafting lamp "industry standard" before the CAD days when you drew on paper with a pencil.

I have been fighting the same problem (advancing age gets to us all eventually). I'm always looking for something better than increasingly powerful readers, but which doesn't get in the way.
I have a binocular microscope, but it has a limited field of view-about postage stamp size, but is great for engraving. However the focal length is only about 8" so the kind of tools that can be used is limited.
The big magnifiying lenses I've seen just don't have the required optical quality and are very fatiguing for day in day out use. And they really get in the way.
A friend of mine is using surgeons magnifiers which he likes very well but are pricey. At least $800. But better than optivisors, which is what I am stuck with most of the time. Which actually, is all the time...
