I was having some fitment issues with a new Remington XCR Compact Tactical. The action was set too far back in the stock when with the recoil lug in contact with the stocks bedding block. This in turn was forcing the bolt handle in to the stock's rearward bolt handle inletting. Not wanting to tune up the inletting and damage the finish, I instead made a stainless steel ship which fits between the recoil lug and the bedding block. The action screws still lined up through the bottom metal and the action. The thickness of the shim for this rifle is .03". I choose stainless as it will not react w, the aluminum. I had brass, stainless and aluminum to choose from. The brass would react with the Al and an aluminum shim of that thickness would be pretty soft. I cut the shim out on the bandsaw and finished it with files.

Axeman, yes bedding the R-Lug would eliminate the need for the shim. I am hoping that the shim will eliminate the need for bedding the R-Lug.
