H4350 and 308

Re: H4350 and 308

It's too slow of a powder for the 308. You won't be able to cram enough powder in there to get near max pressure. If you look at the loading data, the slower burning 308 powders are a compressed charge. H4350 is even slower than those listed.

Re: H4350 and 308

Unless you have a very long throat, you cannot get enough in the case to make it worthwhile. In an older 308 Savage barrel with a very long throat I was able to get 200MK's to about 2500 FPS using H4350 and it was a very accurate load.

Danny Biggs won the FTR National championship using berger 185 and 4350.

He probably single feeds the rounds, has a custom chamber throated LONG, and has a highly compressed powder charge. I could put any powder in a case just about, and get it to go boom. But it wouldn't be the best or optimum powder to be used. There are much better choices out there.

Re: H4350 and 308

Not the Best Choice, but undoubtedly better than using a mortar & pistle to grind up sulphur, saltpeter and charcoal.

Varget, RL15, IMR 4064/4895 even 3031 plus win ball and vita vourhi powders are much better choices if you have access to the powder.

For sure you don't want to run 4350 in a semi-auto.

Just in .308 or any semi auto?

Even in 30-06 in an M1? I thought that (the 4350s) is what they were made for.

Re: H4350 and 308

Hi H4350 is used extensively here for Match Rifle where 190gr is around the lightest projectile used in barrels up to 34" and it is shot from 1000 to 1200 yards it works realy well with 210gr projectiles. For a general load with nearly all projectiles in a 308 use Varget it is perfect. As for 4350 in a M1 Garand DONT you will damage the rifle the powder used was 4895 remember that ina Garand that the pressure curve should be fast if you use a slow powder their will be pressure in the gas poer after the bolt unlocks not a good idea. If shooting a garand with 155gr projectiles or less H4895 will replicate military ammo if using a 168 or 175gr projectile use Varget also remember not to ramp the pressures up to high in a Garand or you will also damage the rifle.

You can also use H4895 with 155gr projectiles and lighter in all 308 loads in a bolt or semi. and with heavier projectiles say 155gr+ switch to Varget for a semi

Re: H4350 and 308

Thanks Wild Bill,

I load .308 mostly for bolt guns, typically with Varg., RL-15, Imr 4064 and 4895(H and IMR). I like the option of using it in my AR-10 when desired. Don't want to tater up my semi using too slow a powder.

I wonder about some of the factory loads out there though. I stocked up on several brands and types after we went commie...

Re: H4350 and 308

Thanks for all the responses.

Since Varget and RL-15 are hard to come by these days, I thought I might be able to use the H4350 I have on hand for 308.

You can use H4350 and imr4350 In a bolt gun but velocities will be low and more muzzle blast. I fyou are using a semi or projectiles up to 155gr H4350 or IMR is a good choice but with heavier projectiles it is just to fast. Varget and Re15 are the best powders for a 308 with 130 to 190gr projectiles you can also use Win748, BLC2, H335, TAC, RE12, N135 (realy good), IMR4064, IMR4320, Accurate4064, IMR4064, Accurate2520, VV N140, VV N540, they will all work well in a 308 depending on the projectile weight with light projectiles Hodgdon Benchmark is also great like 125gr Ballistic Tips.

I know powder is hard to get but have a look around and VV powder is awsome but a bit pricy. Accurate is supposed to be good you have Western Powders there and in a Bolt gun Win 760 works realy well it is double based and ball so you can fit more into the case and get great velocities with it but to slow for semis. Years ago i evenm used heaps of Re7 it works well with a 150gr pill at 2700fps in slr's and m14's. It just depends what you want to do but with a 155 to 175gr projectile it is hard to beat varget, Re15 and VV N140
