I'm just getting started with the 7mm08. I picked up a pound of H4350 and will probably go this route. I am a little curious about the H4831sc though. Most of the loading info for H4831 isn't for the short cut variety and it just looks like max load is more determined by space in the case than pressure. Anybody using H4831sc in 7mm08? How does it compare to H4350?
I know RL-17 generates more speed than anything else. I'm only interested in temperature insensitive powders though.

Re: H4831sc for 7mm08

I think H4831 is going to be too slow, and too "fluffy" (low density) for the 7-08. I say that because my buddys 7-08 is at max pressure with H4350 at 47.5gr/162amax @ 2.875" COAL... ...and that is a rather compressed load. As in you've gotta seat the bullets 2 or 3 times to get them to stay put.

H4831 and even H4831sc are both fluffier than H4350, and require more space. Honestly, with ~162 bullets, the H4350 is a tick too slow - so H4831 will be much too slow. Perhaps with the 180 class bullets it would be better, but I still think H4350 would do better. Maybe the 195gr Bergers coming out???

Try it and see, but I think you'll find, even with a drop tube, you won't be able to get enough H4831sc in the case to get the velocity to match H4350.

Re: H4831sc for 7mm08

I found it to be too slow to work in my 7mm-08. I switched to double based powders to gain more pressure for volume, and ended up using RE-19. I shoot 45.1 gr. behind a Berger 180. That is max in one book and two grains below max in another. I load the same behind all 175's and bump up a grain for 168's.

I'm actually glad you guys think it's too slow. That way I won't feel any need to mess around with it. Since I'm just starting out with the 7mm08 I'm sure it's best if I just concentrate on the one powder for now.
