Need some info about bullet trajectory and the like.

Will ask her just incase someone knows.

So i was shooting my bolt-action .243 rifle earlier. A Remington 770 Youth Edition.

I was shooting at 6 different targets at about 100 yards. I was using a chainlink fence as a 'mount'. I had to use different spots on the fence, a lower link, and higher ones, to hit the different targets as some were higher or to the left or right more than others.

I was basically sighting my scope at that range. The different targets told different stories.

It was only on the last target i shot five times and the pattern was very tight. All the other targets the shots either went to high, to low, or to the left or right.

Did this have anything to do with me changing levels on the fence? Or was it just my shooting?

Also when firing the rifle, should i let the recoil take over or brace for it/hold on to the rifle tighter as to absorb more?

Thanks.

It will change the barrel harmonics and on top of that it will actually cause the barrel to flex and throwyour shot off.. Im sure if you shot off a bipod or a shooting bag so that nothing touches your barrel then you would be far less frustrated. let us know how everything turn out.

Welcome to the hide. There's a wealth of information here. Not dogging you or anything, but look around a whole bunch.
There's a little chunk of fundamentals you have to understand in order to become consistent while shooting. No consistency, no accuracy. There is also a chunk of fundamental knowledge of external factors that you need to have a decent hold on for the same reason. Keep you head up and pay attention to EVERYTHING your rifle tells you and everything you do. Be conscious of every move you make from the time you set your rifle down to the time the recoil settles, and do it the same every time. As soon as the bullet leaves the bore, there is nothing you can do to fix it, so do everything right before you commit to the full squeeze.

To answer your questions,
Yes the harmonics bit is important, even at 100 yards. I agree with what has already been said. Maybe its possible that you could slide your rifle in farther on the fence and rest it on the stock? That might be better. Get creative! Yes, bipods are best though.
Nobody can brake the recoil with muscle and still do everything else right. Make sure you are perfectly behind the rifle and let it happen.
Read, read, read! If you have a specific question, what I do is go to google, type in the question and then type in "snipers hide" after it and it will bring up the closest hits from the site. There might be an easier way to do this, but since my home page is google, it just makes it easy to open another tab and wham bam, I got the question in front of me.
