Happy 234th Birthday to the United States Cavalry!
12 December 1776, Congress authorized the formation of the Regiment of Light Dragoons, also known as the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons or more commonly, "Sheldon's Horse". It was formed under Major turned Colonel Elisha Sheldon from the 5th Regiment of Connecticut Light Horse Militia which then Major Sheldon commanded.
The idea came after Washington saw the effect of the British Cavalry against his Light Infantry. Duties included intelligence gathering, raids, and sometimes functioning as an early PSD in the form of guarding General Washington.
The patron saint of the Cavalry and Armor is Saint George. The Order of St. George is bestowed upon deserving Cavalry Troopers and Officers in three levels depending on rank at the time of the award.
The current unit in charge of conducting One Station Unit Training (Basic/AIT combined) for 19D Cavalry Scouts is the 5th Squadron of the 15th Cavalry Regiment. The Regimental motto is "Tous Pour Un, Un Pour Tous" or, "All For One, One For All". This was decided upon after the Philippine Campaign and the Regimental insignia reflects this with the depiction of weapons native to the Philippines and the Moro warriors they faced.
At the Brigade and Division level, Cavalry elements are "first in, last out". Cavalry Troopers continue to conduct many of the same missions as the Sheldon's Horse in that their two main missions are reconnaissance and security; spilling over into raids, PSD, Zone, Area, and Route Reconnaissance, coordinating direct and indirect fires, and the equally loathed and loved LP/OP (Listening/Observation Post). Common phrases amongst Cavalry Scouts are "Jack of all trades and master of none" and the slightly cockier "If you ain't Cav, you ain't shit!".
Can you tell I'm proud of the Cav?
