Sidearms & Scatterguns Has anybody used these blades?

Re: Has anybody used these blades?

Aus 6 is low grade stainless steel, just be aware of that. It will sharpen easy but not retain an edge well.

Re: Has anybody used these blades?

If you are interested in making knives order some of Aldo's 1084, get some files and a vice and start filling. You'd be amazed what you can do the good annealed steel and files. You can send out to Heat treat or do yourself with a coal fire and a hairdryer. Go till non-magnetic then 3 temper cycles in your oven at 400 for 1 hr. Put on your final edge and sand to preferred finish. Bolt/glue on some handles and done!! See how easy that is.. :)

Re: Has anybody used these blades?

Thanks guys! I've decided that if I ever want to do something like this that i'll just get all of the neccessairy equipment and start making my own blades instead of just buying pre-made units.

I still think I would love making a hobby out of knife making. Someday...

Re: Has anybody used these blades?

Like I said.. I just started with pretty much some flat steel and files (a little dremel work) and I've got two blades shaped and ready for heat treat. Just have to build a forge next when I get time. It can be an inexpensive hobby and very rewarding. Here is a link to my first experience.. I've been documenting on Bladeforums.

Here are some great YouTube sites.. Nick Wheeler is on Bladeforums.. good guy!

This is a great tutorial (he does forging instead of stock removal.. and if you can get past the ranting and noticing he's using a belt grinder when that's what he's ranting about.. there is a some good stuff) Watch the whole series.

Re: Has anybody used these blades?

Fantastic links!! Thank you very much for posting those. It took me a few hours to get through all of the videos in that series but it's very cool to see how it is done from start to finish.
