Has anyone tried unleaded bullets in the 224 valkyre?

I am in California (go ahead, insert joke here), and my beloved 222 while still accurate with the 36gr Barnes varmint grenade, has lost it's legs beyond 120 or so yards, and is only somewhat better than my 22mag. In my beloved state, you can't hunt varmints with leaded bullets. I have a Howa 1500/Smith and Wesson and was thinking about rebarreling to 223 with a faster twist (1-7) to be able to use the 50gr Barnes or Hornady GMX which are quite a bit better the the 36gr. Then I start reading about the valkyrie and I start thinking I need a new rifle. The problem with these "unleaded" rounds is they are relatively long for their weight: the 50gr Barnes is just a tad shorter than a 68gr Hornady match bthp. My buddies 22-250 really shoots the 50gr well, but the unleaded bullets do some odd things, I think because of their relative long length to short weight. Before I go all early adopter, I wanted to see if anyone has tried this.
Any advice would be appreciated.
