Rifle Scopes hawke optics

Re: hawke optics

Also curious how these track and how they hold up over time. I have heard great things about the way the company does business. Also like the recticle. How is the clarity on higher magnification with the sidewinders?

Re: hawke optics

The glass is good, but by far not premier. There are a lot of reviews out there, and since they went to the Tactical 30 series they seem to have worked out most kinks. For $400, they take a beating, I have dropped min (both....unfortunately) and they held zero perfectly. I did a box test at 100yds twice on the scopes, and they have never failed to track, and the 6.5-20x42 on my SPS .308 has seen 900-1000 (I don't have my log out...) rounds with no change to POA/POI.
For a budget scope, in SFP I think they are a great choice. I have had the mag up to 20 due to the Mil Hashes being "accurately utilized". If the parallax is adjusted, I had no problem, but I do realize the price point issue.
Do not expect a NF quality, and use it for all its worth, they will perform. Also keep in mind, that with any SFP optic, it always wise to verify the reticule, and physically mark the ring to show. Neither of mine are reticule accurate at 10x or 20x, they are actually slightly below the index marks, but spending some time with a tape measure and a sharpie will pay off.

Do a google search, and you will probably find all the reviews you need to make a decision.

Re: hawke optics

I have a Sidewinder 30 on my Remington 700 308 SPS which is in a AICS with ITT rings. I was leary of purchasing one but I did and used it at a sniper school and something internally broke and the elavation turrent would not lock down and match the index lines for elevation. It shot 1/4 MOA at 100yds until it broke. I sent it back to the company with a letter because it has a lifetime warranty. The rep for the company called me and stated that it was their best product and they do not have a problem with them and that they can be mounted on a 50BMG. He told me he would take it a part and then call me back. True to his word he called me back apologizing profusely and then sent me a replacement optic. I love the thing and I mil targets all day long with it on 10x it is great for day and night shoots with the illuminated reticle(two diff colors). The other plus is the ballistic software for the mil or SR reticle. Put in your data for the round that you are shooting and it will give you a printout that you put on the inside of your scope cap. I think they will be another NightForce an unknown that came from nowhere and then will hit it big. I just purchased a 338 Lapua that I will be putting a Sidewinder 30 on also.

Re: hawke optics

I went to a Hawke scope on a Theobn air rifle after it trashed 2 new Bushnell Elite 4 X 12 scopes in about 5 minutes- each even though they were rated for a magnum air rifle. The Hawke has held up well.

Re: hawke optics

I'm a Hawke dealer & have a bit of familiarity with the lineup. The Sidewinder 30 Tac line is excellent, from a durability, features, optical quality, and value perspective. I'm running both the 3.5-14x and 10x models on two rifles, a custom .260 and a Savage 6.5x284. The tracking has been flawless & accurate & I really like the 1/2 mil dot reticle. The optical quality, to my eyes, is a touch better than that used in the Nikon Monarch line (better resolution & field of view) but not quite as good as the Bushnell Elite line in terms of clarity. The illuminated reticle feature isn't something I use all that often but it is nice to have it just in case. I feel this line offers a ton of features for the money & would be a nice addition to any shooter's lineup where they don't want to spend big money on glass but want reliability & a nice holdover reticle.

Hawke has another model, the NiteEye DigiIR, that is new for 2011. I picked up the 4-16x 50mm with the SR-6 reticle for a Savage 22/250 that is bone stock & weighs about 6lbs (varmint/coyote rig). I tested it side by side with a Minox ZA5 3-15x 42mm & came away very impressed. Again, the Hawke impressed from an optical quality standpoint & offers an amazing value when you consider it has an illuminated reticle with a MSRP around $290.00.

Yes, having a model in FFP would be preferred & I have mentioned this to their North American operation manager during the SHOT Show. Hawke is a British owned company & doesn't have an short term plans to release such a scope. However, it is on their radar & could become a reality in 2012.

Re: hawke optics

That would be interesting, ffp Hawke, with all the features it has, they should put a zero-stop and revolution marks on the turrets. Those would be my only complaints, otherwise both of mine are excellent for their application.

Re: hawke optics

I really like my two Sidewinder 30 tacticals. The one on my AR-15 6.8 SPC fell of the hood of a raised Toyota pickup. This was about 4' high and still is on target. I cant complain for the price at all. Also they have the really nice glass etched reticle.

Re: hawke optics

After 1 year of use, mine has a tiny spec on the reticle and illumination knob (sidefocus is ok) is loose and sometimes it looses parallax setting through shootings. Still holds zero and all and after i get IOR (got real luck as i'd have to pick it up on Friday and the scope had a speck on the okular ring so obviously back it went...my relationship with IOR is troubled to say the least it seems it's just not meant to be

) i will send it for repairs as scope is really great.

Well here is my Sidewinder 30 on my rifle with the sunshade installed. I really do not use the sunshade much any more becuase I use a honeycomb filter on it now which is basically a kill flash. Which does the same job as the sunshade but shortens the length of the scope and screws into the exit objective just like the sunshade.
