It's very hard to be faster than someone who already has their pistol in your face, but not too hard to at least be smarter than them. Robbers just want to rob you and not kill you if they don't "have to", they don't want to face murder charges either. So be smarter than they are, give them what they want, dangle that carrot and deceive them, then be faster.

Intentional deception.

The bad guy went for the money giving the vic an opening.
Ducking behind the innocent bystander was a pretty good move too.
