Re: hearing safe (actual numbers)
I damaged my hearing shooting with a brake, under a metal roof, using only plugs or average ear muffs. I now have Tinnitus and it does take some serious getting used to and I am still learning to cope. Protect your hearing and the hearing of your loved ones who know no better, I didn't until it was too late. I thought I was safe with hearing protection.
I have done A BUNCH of reading and studying since this began in September of this year. I now ONLY shoot suppressed and ONLY with good hearing protection also. I use both.
I figure my cans are good for about 30 db on average and my hearing protection is good for about 30 db too. If I am at the range I use muffs and plugs now!
The average gun blast runs from 150 to as much as 170 db on the big boomers.
I figure I am only subjected to 100 to 110 db blasts when I am shooting. As long as I am shooting ALONE at the range. You have to account for the blasts around you too. This 100 to 110 amount of db exposure is far safer but still at a level that can cause damage with high volume sustained daily exposure.
Even with good hearing protection, you are very close to the level of CERTAIN damage when shooting most centerfires, especially short barrel with brakes etc.
Please do your homework and protect your hearing!
