Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

I froze my ass off in Kuwait, and it was 70 degrees!

When you get used to 100 plus during the day, a big drop makes it feel cold. Nothing like wearing a bear suit on patrol in the middle of summer in the desert.

Stay safe.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Just last evening I watched "Restrepo: Outpost Afghanistan" on the National Geographic Channel.

Stay safe.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Doing my best to stay warm. Dipping into the 30s at night and in the mornings. Luckily the USMC adopted the new Happy Suits. Basically like a sleeping bag in the form of pants and jacket. They however did not issue me any happy socks. I had to sacrifice a pair of my own socks to starch up. They now stand up on their own.

As for watching out for the suicide bombers, thats the downfall of my job, I have to go out and de arm that shit, why oh why did I volounteer for the most ridiculous job in the Military. I mean who in their right mind would ever knowingly walk up to an IED and take it apart. I equate it to walking up to a pissed of bear and trying to tickle it into submission. I should have listened to my pops when he said never volounteer for shit. No good deed goes unpunished.

Thank you for all of your thoughts.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Huge respect for you mate. Hope you make it back safe.

Good luck.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

boom, tell your EOD buddies we support them. Don't know which unit is your's, but you probably know a few of them.

Restrepo was a good show to about halfway or so. That was where I found I could no longer watch it and had to leave the room...nuff on that

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Thanks Switchblade, and will do. Most of us out here are stationed out of Camp Pendleton, some from Oki and Yuma. Run into some Air Force guys here and there but in our AOs it is typically Marine EOD since it is well Marine AOs.

I did volunteer once for that shit as well.... Well lets just say I lived to tell the tale.... Shit happens... Buddy be good, stay safe and be warm... Nothing like a nice warm woman to keep you cosy on the long nights.lol

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Sincerely, thank you for your service. If you ever need anything, please let us know.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Well if anyone is feeling generous there are a couple of items I am needing. The flip caps for my Scope are broken and they dont have the supplies here to fix it. The scope is a Schmidt & Bender 3-12 x 50 Police Marksman LP II. It just makes me sick that I cant keep the dust and sand off of the lenses. Also the flip cap for my MUNS (AN/PVS-27 Magnum Universal Night Sight™ (MUNS™)) is broken. Here is a link to its specifics: http://www.omnitechpartners.com/osti/products/muns.htm. I belive it is a 40mm Exit pupil.

Other than those items if anyone wants to send out some gun porn and other magazines since we dont have a PX/BX at my COP/FOB to buy magazines at, that would be awesome.

If anyone has a business that has their own t-shirts or baseball hats and you want to send them out I will get photos of the guys out here sporting your threads. As with any infantry unit there are a sh1t ton of gun nuts out here.

And anyone that wants to send out general care packages with the usuals, (baby wipes, ramen noodles, socks, anything that can be cooked with hot water, electric griddle, microwave, toaster oven ect ect) I know the guys out here would really appreciate it.

Here is the mailing address for me out here, and stuff that gets sent out will definetly get divied up with the guys and not hoarded by anyone in particular.
SSgt Raymond Conard
1/8 C Co (EOD)
Unit 73215
FPO AE 09510-3215

Again I really appreciate everyones thoughts and prayers for all of us out here. I know, with the crowd on this sight I shouldnt be surprised, but it is really nice to hear from people who care about us out here. To most of the guys it seems that were are just another news story or statistic for the government. So it is just really nice to hear from people who really care. Thanks again everyone

If you could swing it, box up the vikings cheerleaders and send them out that would make sleeping way more cumfy. But seriously anything that you can send out will be much appreciated by everyone out here.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Sorry. Can't help you with the cheerleaders but I could send a couple dirty mags with. Any particular kinds of socks? Also would a some pmags be of interest? I'm trying to get as many people as I can to chip in on this. I'm assuming a carton of smokes would be a good addition to?

As far as socks go, I usually wear Covert Threads, but they might be hard to find if you dont have a Tacticool Gear shop around, outher than that any brand of warm, sweat wicking boot socks, size 9-12. Gave up smoking a few years back but Cope Long Cut finds its way into my pockets on a daily basis.

Oh and does anyone know what the price for the m-14/m1 multi tools are. The last team that had my M39 EMR lost the tool

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

OK, I got some butler creek caps that I think will work, one obj and two eye.

I will send out those, a bunch of DVDs (including Sniper3, try not to get to excited), a cheapo Harris copy bipod, a SO Tech stock pack, a scope/muzzle cover and a bunch of tampons (great for bullet wounds, not because I am making fun of anyone).

Hopefully, someone on your end can use this stuff.

I will go to the store tonight and pick up baby wipes and ramen...any specific requests?

If I send an American Snipers "Face Shoot The Fuckers" patch, can you wear it?

Brian

Thank you much for the gear. As for the food requests, what ever ramen the store has. We tend to put in some custom spices in the ramen to kick it up a notch.

As for the patch, Hell ya I can wear it. What are they gonna do, SHave my head, bend my dog tags and send me to afghanistan?

And if I cant wear it I will just hand it to one of our Hogstooths and I know they will sport it on missions.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Be safe. It's pretty cool over here in Iraq too. It's bad when it's 75 out and you're shivering.

There is a smaller Allen key multi-tool set for the Sage stocked M-14 on the civilian market for about $25 from Fulton.

The specific M39 EMR tool as pictured on the left below is considerably larger and has some unique features including the dual diameter piston drill/scraper, the gas plug hex wrench and the socket for the Badger ring nuts. These aren't readily available on the oommercial market - I know as I went through the works getting Bondhus to make a run for my collection for $$$.

I'll shoot you a PM later, so let me know if that larger multi-tool is what you're looking for and I'll get one headed to you.

Cheers,
SA

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

I have people asking how many guys are in you're unit. They want to know how much stuff to get. My girlfriend posted a couple lists on FB and other forums she's on.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

It's a bit chilly here for sure and out higher in elevation it's colder. But saying that it was actually warm this morning when standing in line for chow....... Hell, at home back in NY my wife had the snow-blower out already!!!!!

Now it's about time for rain and some snow so get reay for the mud! Hope you have plenty of warm socks.

If I were back home I'd put together a box of goodies for you but for now I just keep looking for boxes myself from my wife.

Stay safe boss!

As far as I know the boxes arent searched before getting to use, although when I was in iraq I had a bottle of Capt Morgans get to me empty with a thank you note from the Mail clerks.

I would say there are around 200 guys in the unit I am supporting.

That is almost exactly like the one that comes with our M39's. The larger one that is.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

There are ways to outsmart the mail clerks. Its been a couple years, but we had people send whiskey in mouthwash bottles. Try to find the off-brand mouthwash that comes in weird "whiskey" color liquid. But you must reseal it to look legit. Sometimes a shot of whiskey after a long day of combat helps you sleep. Raise your glasses, thank whoever you pray to that you survived, and get prepared to do it all over again in a few hours. Stay safe, you're all still in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: Hello from chilly Afghanistan

Ahhh being that I have to have somewhat stable hands and I am on call 24/7 I tend to try and stay sober. Now Iraq was a different situation all together. We had 3 teams at on base so we always had someone covering all calls
