Hi everyone...Ive been poking around and have gained alot of useful info. I had a few more specific question that i was hoping to get some help with. I was shooting one of my friends rifles and was having alot of fun. He has custom remington 700s chambered in 338 Remington ultramag and one in 6xc. Here is the debate I am having with myself. What rifle should i get? What calibre should I get? What optic should I get.

I am leaning toward .308 for my first sniper rifle but was also considering .338 Lapua and 6xc. Which would you recommend for my first sniper rifle?

From what I have been reading, I think I am going to go with a Leupold Mark IV, but am open to suggestions.

My budget for this project is $3000-$3500 all in.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

definitely not a 338 or 6xc if you arent set up to reload. 308 is a great beginner caliber. With your budget you could up it a little and look in the exchange for a used GAP rifle or custom in the for sale section.

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

Agree with deadly0311. I would stick with 308 for now. Unless you are ready to reload, even then finding the components for 338 LM is not exactly cheap. After you have worn out one or two barrels for the 308, then I would consider 338 LM

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

Forgot to mention that I am set up to reload, would just need the new dies for a new calibre. I am an experienced shooter jut not in long range shooting.

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

the 338 and 6xc are the more experienced reloaders and shooter rounds. Definitely not what you want to get into the precision game with. Get a 308 and shoot the piss out of it

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

how far do you plan to shoot? what are you shooting at? remember its not a sniper rifle unless you are a trained sniper usng it on the job. Definatly do not pick a 338 for your first gun. do you want a custom or factory rifle? Leupold MKIV is a good scope although i would reccommend a sightron SIII for a little less since i've heard the quality of leupys has slipped as of late.

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

I would like to have the capability to shoot at 1000...For now just punching paper and shooting steel. Factory vs. custom is one of the questions that i was hoping to get an answer to. I was looking at the Kimber 8400 advanced Tactical due to it being in my price range.

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

the kimbers are hit or miss, wether or not you get a good one is up to chance. The 308 will make it to 1K, that is your best bet. There are GAPs that come up from time to time for under 3K then drop a good optic on it and you are well on your way to 1K. But to me it sounds like you want the 338 or 6xc. No matter how much we try and talk you out of it you are going to ultimately decide what you get. My recommendation is the custom 308

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

I was actually leaning toward the .308 as mentioned in my op. Are there any other custom options besides GAP in that price range? Any other factory .308's that I should look at? Thanks for all your help so far guys!

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

here's the deal

get a gun you can get ammo most anywhere in a pinch...like wally world or ace hardware

its all about triggers and barrels

spend on glass and base, rings ......

one can learn a lot from a .308

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

Get a .308 barreled action that has already been trued and stick it in a AICS stock because you wont need bottom metal and shouldn't have to bed it.

find a nice used barreled action that has been trued $1000
AICS 1.5 stock used $700
leupy mark iv used $900
rings and base $200
total $2800 spend the rest on ammo

more trigger time = PRICELESS

Re: Help!! I need a recomendation

Buy a Remington SPS tactical in .308 for less than $1K. Get a Nightforce scope. As you learn more, you can upgrade the Remington. The NF scope will be with your forever....priceless.
