I have a .308 Remington 700 that I bought off gunbroker 3 years ago when I was 17. I called Remington and they said the action is made in 1964. When I bought the rifle, the guy that owned before it was supposedly an old gunsmith. The gun was being sold with the help of the gunsmiths friend that had a gunbroker account. The stock that was on it was an old wood stock that had a piece of wood glued on the bottom that resembles a modern benchrest rifle stock. The trigger has a crisp 2 lb trigger pull

The heavy barrel that is on it looks to be an older model that has the same bluing fade as the action. I think the barrel looks somewhat like a varmint contour with a larger end toward the action with a slight tapper down towards the end while still keeping an overall heavy barrel.

The accuracy with my handloads appear to be incredible for an older rifle as you can see in the pictures on the link. I shot 175gr. Sierra Matchking with 40gr. of Varget powder and Federal Match brass. There are (2) 3-shot grouping.

I replaced the stock that was on it with one that I ordered from HS Precision. The scope is a 4.5-14x40 Tactical Leupold.

If anyone knows anything about this barrel or where this could have came from I would love to know. Leave your thoughts. Thank You!

How fast is 40gr of Varget pushing a 175SMK? My guess is about 2000fps. Looks like an old R700 VS (varmint special) with the holes for irons on the barrel.

Yeah 40gr has got to be really slow. I run 44 grains. Holes are definitely for irons.

According to the Sierra Reloading manual, 40gr. is pushing 2400fps.

There is no markings on the barrel and I don't know if these sight wholes were drilled and tapped by the gunsmith.

I did get a decent deal on it. With the woodglued stock described above and no rings i think i payed around 600 but I cant remember. Especially since it looks like it can compete with some high dollar rifles. The squares on the target are 1 in if you didnt know already so any estimates on MOA?

The pictures dont really do justice for this rifle, it really is beautiful in real life and has a very smooth action.
