In the series Generation Kill, during the Sniper Engagement with Sgt Pappy and Rudy Reyes they produce a front bag that looks like its attached to a utility style belt from the truck, I am curious if anyone has come across one of these or knows where they can be found. That clip is the only place I have seen one

Clip is here

you can see said piece of equipment at 2.00

Re: Help Identifying a USMC piece of equipment

Shooting cradles like that were something that was typically improvised rather than something that could be purchased commercially. Truthfully all you would need to make a similar cradle is some duct tape, sleeping mat foam, and stiff cardboard. Dust some camo Krylon on it to knock down the shine and presto bango you got yourself a sniper shooting rest. I've also made them from some PVC tubing cut in half with a 1/4-20 T-Nut so that it could be attached to a camera tripod. It seems like only in the past few years have all of these cool shooting cradles hit the market, prior to that you pretty much had to improvise your own.

High Speed Gear makes a butt pack that does kinda the same thing:

Get a piece of pvc pipe and cut it in half and and pad it.

Re: Help Identifying a USMC piece of equipment

find yourself a spare iso mat from supply or if your a civ , your local surplus store and some duct tape and cardboard from your mre and you would be amazed at what kind of rest you could come up with

You have more choices in color then Henry Ford would allow too.

Re: Help Identifying a USMC piece of equipment

The rest in the video looked a little strange. Here is an old butt-pack rest made of isomatte, shoegoo, and duct tape.
Next to it is a typical looking tripod rest made of PVC pipe and isomatte.
Since these rests were homemade they all look a little different. Different preferences and different materials available.

The butt-pack rest was made with the "one is none, two is one" way of thinking. If your bipod or tripod went down you still had another rest available.

The butt-pack rest isn't used by too many Marines anymore. They are Old School.

Re: Help Identifying a USMC piece of equipment

I was stationed at WTBN Quantico in 2000 which was also the home of Scout Sniper Instructors Course. All the students had buttpacks like the ones posted above.

Side Note: Those guys were Ninjas. We would be outside on a smoke break or cleaning weapons and every once in a while, if you stared long enough at the grassy hill behing us you would slowly atart to notice things out of place. Then all of the sudden, like the 3D hidden pictures there where 10-15 of them just sitting out in plain site. Part of their course was observation and they would just there on the hillside and draw. It was funny seeing people see them for the first time.
