Hey all. I have a .223 RRA operator on it's way, and sometime in the near future I'm gonna look to put a low power optic on it. It's the 16" bbl model with flip up front sight and stand alone rear. I ordered the one with the handguard with full length rails. I wanna keep the price below 500 with mount included.

I have no experience with these scopes so any input is appreciated. Here are a few I've been considering.

-Burris 1-4x24 MTAC 30mm

-Burris 3x32 AR 332 Tactical Sight

-Millett 1-4x24 DMS

-Nikon M-223

-Viper pst mil dot. althought it kind of exceeds my price limit

I will consider a SS if it's completely necessary.

The rifle will be used for target shooting, predator hunting, and plinking. I don't baby my rifles because I'm not a pussy so it'll need to be durable. External adjustments aren't essential since I will most likely not be dialing shots.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Help me choose an affordable AR optic

1st post but been lurking for a year or so. I don't post on subjects I don't know much about, but I know a little about AR's.

What distances do you plan to shoot?
how much accuracy do expect out of that rifle?
what ammo are you going to use?
You realize you cannot use that rear sight and a scope?
Is it too late to order a different AR? There are some better options for the money out there?

1-4 would be a good option if you plan on doing CQB to 400 yards or so (perhaps some 3-un type shooting). My choice would be the PST you listed.

The swfa 3-9 previously posted would be a good option if you are doing more hunting and target shooting. The package is an incredible value.

Re: Help me choose an affordable AR optic

For the choices you listed and your "hard use"... it is completely necessary to look at the SS 1-4X.

Re: Help me choose an affordable AR optic

The Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24mm are great little scopes. For the price and what you get they are hard to beat.

Link to the Viper PST Series 1-4x24-TMCQ.

I plan on shooting within 500yds. I expect and am confident it will produce moa accuracy with my handloads. Yeah I realize the rear sight can't be used in conjunction with rear sight. The 3-9SS would be considered but it's a full size scope and very overkill for what I'll be doing.

Thanks for the input fellas.

Re: Help me choose an affordable AR optic

hypno, what are your expectations? In your post above, in one sentence you state that you are expecting MOA accuracy with your handloads and then in the next sentence, you're saying that you think that a 3-9X scope will be overkill.

Although I will concede that a good shooter could shoot MOA at 100 yards with a 4X scope (I know that I can't), it won't be easy and shooting MOA at longer distances will get increasingly more difficult simply due to the lack of magnification.

So, are you going to be shooting at larger targets, expecting only to be able to hit the target, or are you going to be shooting at paper or smaller targets (MOA size)?

I've only been into longer range shooting for a bit over a year and I can comfortably do MOA size targets out to about 400 yards with a 10X scope when I'm really on my game.

I'm only bringing this up because I started out seeking that perfect 1-4X scope that would transform my AR into a Jack of all trades and the scope for me turned out to be a 2.5-10X32.

Just be sure of what you want/need.

Re: Help me choose an affordable AR optic

I have the Millet DMS 1-4, while a good price for this scope it is lacking in clarity compared to the SS and PST, not very robust either. I am slowly retrofitting my DMS's to the PST and won't go back to the cheap millet. I have used them in 3 gun matches but the PST is way better.
hope this helps.

I think you will be lucky to get 1MOA out of that rifle even with the best handloads. Chrome lined AR barrels shooting 1 MOA is the exception rather than the rule. The only 1MOA CL I have seen do it are Noveske's and Centurions (the new FN made Spikes may do it too). All of those are barrels made by FN hammer forged, made with barrel steel used in M249's and best chrome lined barrels I know of. Not saying your RRA won't but I think you will be very luck if it does. Most rack grade non-hammer forged CL barrels are 2-3MOA.

PST of the scopes you listed, but for hard use SS 1-4 might be the way to go.

would love to see a report once you get it all set up.

Re: Help me choose an affordable AR optic

GRSC is definitely worth a look, budget, illuminated, FFP, durable and for the $ it's tough to beat. Mine took a 6-8 foot drop onto concrete and still retaining zero, don't ask how I did that, I was really surprised it didn't smash though. I'm not affiliated just very content with mine.

Re: Help me choose an affordable AR optic

I really, really like the Vortex 1-4x. If you can stretch your budget a bit to accommodate it, I think you'll be happier in the long run.

Re: Help me choose an affordable AR optic

The Burris AR332 worked well on my SR556, despite some of the bad reviews on the internet. The lit reticle is a nice option in low light when hunting coyotes or shooting for practice after work when its late evening.
