Application is for my .308 bolt gun.

Scope will be a Nightforce NXS 8-32X56 mounted on a 20moa base.

Used for various types of target shooting from paper to steel plates. I just want a good all around reticle that is easy to use.

Your input is appreciated!

Re: Help me choose my reticle

Since you have chosen a Nightforce NXS 8-32X56, I assume you are interested in shooting Benchrest style at known distances for small groups. I would look at CH-3 or NP-2DD. Talk to some Benchrest shooters and see what they prefer.

If you are shooting paper and steel just for the fun of it you may find yourself wishing for a lower powered scope. I had a 8-32 power once but sold it as I never liked shooting above 18 or 20 power. There was to many distractions when shooting prone off a bipod any higher than that. Now I use a 3.5-15 mil-dot as a all purpose and a 6.5-20 with a fine crosshair when I am testing ammo loads.

If I had the 3.5-15 to do over I would go MLR with Mrad adjustments, the power is fine for what I need.

Re: Help me choose my reticle

I'll add in my opinion too that you will want much less magnification than you're thinking of. If you are going the NF route, get the 3.5-15 with the MLR reticle and the mil turrets.

Re: Help me choose my reticle

I dunno. 32x may be too much. But I rarely ever shoot in anything less than 25x with my 5.5-25 Falcon. Even at 100 yds, I shoot in 25x. At 1000 yds, the steel plate is still pretty small in 25x, so I would not want to shoot much less than that. And unless I'm shooting moving targets at 50 yds - I doubt I would need anything less than 5x. So for me, I prefer higher magnification. But I certainly think you can go too far too.

You must be shooting in some mighty cool weather; I have 3 NF 5-22 scopes and find it awful tough to deal with mirage past 14-18x at "longer" distances--that's in mid-70* weather in bright sun. I can't imagine using 25x at 1000; at 100 it's no problem but out at LR, I'm happy with my 5-22's. Even 300yd can be tough in 80* weather beyond ~14x. I have an 8-32x56 that was my first purchase. I bought it because I knew the rifle would "never" go LR, and for 100yd, it's just fine, but I was lucky enough to test it's abilities at 1000yd before I outfitted my LR rifles, and decided that they would be just fine at a max of 22x.

I really, really like the NP-R2. Simple math, not a lot of hassling with the mildot system, which I was not raised on. Since I'm only an "occassional" shooter, not much practice is required to keep the easier ranging/conversion formula in my head.

Re: Help me choose my reticle

32x is too much magnification for most applications. I have a Sightron SIII 8-32x56 that I shoot with out to longer ranges, and I actually find that I shoot as good or better at 8x. On to your question about NF. I have the 5.5-22x50 w/ the NP-R1 reticle. I love this thing, but I grew up shooting MOA also, so I am more accustomed to it. I have of recent been playing around with the mil/mil systems of reticles and turrets and must say it is growing on me. With that said, I still would not give up my NP-R1 reticle. It is just user-friendly.

By the way, I shoot the 5.5-22 more often at 5.5 than at 22. I just seem to shoot better with less magnification. If you shoot at all in the summer, the mirage is going to kill your ability to use higher magnification.

Re: Help me choose my reticle

I have the MLR with Mil-Radian knobs, never new anything about mils before my purchase and I love it now that I have had some practice and understand more about mils,Thanks to the guys here on the hide that have helped!

Re: Help me choose my reticle

I really like the NP-R reticles. 1 or 2 are awesome. I personally own the mil-dot reticel, which NF's edition is awesome.

At a recent sniper training and exercise here in AZ, there were some guys using the NP-R reticles and they were getting their shots off quicker than the rest of us who were still doing math. It is a great system and really easy to use. I have been using the mil system for about a year and 1/2 but the NP-R might just be my next reticle. It is awesome for targets and hunting.

I am not a fan of the MLR, for some reason I just dont shoot it as well as the mil-dot. I dont measure as accurately with it. I may just be retarded, but that was my opinion when I tried it. Definitely match the turrets and you'll be good to go.

Good Luck,
Nate

Re: Help me choose my reticle

Thanks again to everyone.

I ordered my scope from Bear Basin, with input from Randy and John @ BB

After discussing my application, and also the input from SH members I ordered an NXS 8-32X56 MLR

Also a deciding factor was the 0% financing from BB.
