I'm currently trying to find a Remington 700 in .300 win mag for less than $500. Is this realistic? gunbroker and google puts them above $800.

Brownells no longer sells actions only? Is there anyone out there that does? I'm trying to put together a very lightweight .300 with a titanium action and a 20" barrel. Can a kind soul point me in the right direction to locate just an action?

I was at Walmart the other night think they had stainless steel complete rifle with a cheap scope for I think it was $425.00

Re: Help plz; Action only sales still available?

You won't get a titanium rifle for under a grand, period. Remington no longer makes the Alaskan Ti anyway, so you'd have to go with something like a browning titanium mountain rifle, or with an aftermarket action.

x-treme shooting products is making a titanium action that is r700 footprint, that would be your best bet. They start at around a grand for action only, and use Remington triggers, etc. Even then, the bolts are not titanium (nor were they in Alaskan Ti) because titanium galls badly when wearing on itself. The bolts in remmy actions were stainless, I assume it's the same for most others.

I would not choose a 20" barrel for win mag, you're going to lose a lot of velocity with a tube that short. Instead, go with a fluted barrel, or a smaller contour. Also, look into the carbon-wrapped barrels.

Not to be offensive, but part of me thinks you're trolling... in one breath you ask for a cheap action, then in the other talk about titanium actions. If you're really planning a build like that, why are you hunting just any old $500 remington action on google?

Re: Help plz; Action only sales still available?

I would look more at your stock, barrel, scope and mount choice before looking at going a titanium action to save weight as its easier to save weight in these places first 20" is too short for a win mag carbon wrapped is the best way to keep weight of a barrel without really any sacrifice to accuracy my cousin had a Howa Christensen in .300 wsm and it cloverleafed at 100m with factory ammo and was really light so good to carry as for an action I'm not 100% but midway may stock them

Re: Help plz; Action only sales still available?

@BCW thanks for the extra info on the titanium. Not trolling, I've just found that the Rem 700s are running $800 locally here. It was my hope that if I was buying a titanium action only I wouldn't have to pay the full price of a 'normal' remington (and hopefully it would have been under $500).

So what I'm understanding is that I should expect to pay above $500, and shouldn't just buy an action as the cost difference is the same, and to try and cut weight from the stock and barrel before I worry about the action.

At the risk of sounding arrogant, I shouldn't need more than one shot at an elk at 400 yards. From what I've gathered hitting 1 moa at that range on a 20" barrel isn't that much harder than a 26". It also wouldn't be a target rifle, so I'm not worried about the recoil of being on the range all day.

The issue is not accuracy the issue that why would someone build a 300 magnum and then cut the barrel short and loose what give the magnums their edge, the muzzle velocity. If want a short barreled rifle to shoot elk at 400 yards then get something that has less powder capacity and used faster burning powder. An example would would be 30-06, that round is more then capable of do what you want and is can better utilize a shorter barrel.

Re: Help plz; Action only sales still available?

The thread you mention doesn't contain much other then Franks comment. And Frank was correct in what he said. At 400 yards it really won't matter. But it still brings me back to my point. Why build a 300 Win Mag for a 400 yard shot? At that distance a 243 is plenty adequate. For hunting the two things that matter most are shot placement and bullet selection. The 300 Magnums were designed to push heavy bullets really fast in order to push the limits of effective ranges. If you aren't going to do that then what is the point of building such a rifle?

How much of an effect on velocity/energy would dropping 6" off the barrel have here... http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...421#Post2910421
The response was it would be more than fine. Do you happen to have a reference I could bum off ya to compare? </div></div>

Here is some more date regarding a shorter barreled 300WM.

Quoted from the link http://www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/ "To find the answers, Tac Ops took a 26-inch barreled .300 Win. Mag. and chopped the barrel down in one-inch increments as they previously did with the .308 Winchester. Ten rounds of Federal Match 190-grain BTHP Gold Medal were fired from each increment. No velocity was lost from 26 inches to 22 inches. Velocity loss started to occur only after they went below 22 inches."

eta: If you want a BFG then build a 300WM, if your goal is to kill elk most of the 6/5's or 7mm's will do the job. The Swedes and Finns have been killing elk and caribou (and the occasional Soviet invader) for decades with the 6.5 Swede.

Re: Help plz; Action only sales still available?

@Longshot The only 'point' I have is that I have a preference for the .300 win mag. It's just what I like to shoot.

@everyone else. Thank you for the info. Especially Training Wheels and Mallard for the references.

Re: Help plz; Action only sales still available?

So Gunbroker and Google price them at over $800 but you want one for $500?

I would just buy a bunch and sell them on gunbroker lol.

The last time I saw Rem 700 actions on Brownells I believe they were over $400. Add barrel, stock, etc. and you're not that far from $1000. If you want something cheap(er), and accurate then get a Savage. The issues I've had with them don't matter if you just need one shot.
