I was working up finishing an report I have spent the last week writing when I got the dreaded Window blue screen and crash. When I tried to reboot by computer I got: "HD S.M.A.R.T. Capable but Command Failed" and it won't boot any further.

I will be screwed if I can't retrieve this word document.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

You either have a virus or your HD crashed, the best way to know is to remove your hd and plug it into a desktop to see if you can access the files on the HD. You can get a laptop HD to USB adapter from a computer store and just use it like a external HD on your desktop to see if the drive is still alive, and if it is, you can copy the word doc. to your desktop.

jasonk is the man!!!

The bad news is my HD is toast. The good news is jasonk stepped up big time and help me retrieve a critical document. I owe him one. Thanks again.

Damn, that sucks, good to hear you rescued the doc. I've never had a HD fail me, I have one in my computer right now that I've had for almost 7 years now, running almost the whole time, I transplanted it from my last comp into the current one.

That blue screen is called a "memory dump". If its a relatively new hard-drive, check your warranty. Doesn't always replace what's lost, but at least you can get a new hard drive so it doesn't happen again.

The sad this is I had a 200g external HD sitting within 2 feet of my laptop and 3 thumb drives. Sometimes you can't help stupid.

I am living proof.

What did you do jason? Have him boot from a linux CD?

As a side note I use WD hard drives and you get for free a version of acronis. I have 3 1TB drives, 2 I run in raid and a third I just clone every week in a sata bay and take out of the computer and put in the gun safe.

Gave him the external drive enclosure tip and emailed him a program that would assist him in the recovery of his lost data. Apparently it saved the day.....just happy it worked.

Hopefully he lost all the pics of his ladies though, we can hope!

They only crash if you put important stuff on them.
