Range Report Help with ballistics program

Re: Help with ballistics program

It's a complete mystery to me that this .jar works on Mac. I know it <span style="font-style: italic">should</span>, but the PM_ballistics program that comes with my book is a .jar that was compiled with the same IDE as the Berger program and it doesn't work on Mac (many users have tried).

Why the Berger Ballistics jar works with Mac and my PM_Ballistics doesn't is a mystery for me.

Lindy, I agree that JBM can scare off beginners. It's hard to make something that works well for all levels of users. Another downside of JBM is that you have to be online to use it. Not knocking the program, I think it's great but there's no such thing as 'one size fits all'.

The complete JBM package, true.

However, Ballistic by Jonathan Zdziarski, running on an iPod Touch or iPhone has given me identical results to JBM. (Using G7 data from Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting by Bryan Litz - Many thanks Bryan)

Re: Help with ballistics program

I use Field Firing Solutions in the field, because it has a feature set matched by no other program running on a portable device.

On my P.C., though, Bryan's Berger program is simple, easy to set up, and accurate. Oh - and free.

Is there a way to download the JBM site and run it locally on a your computer using maybe Apache web server?

Re: Help with ballistics program

2shot1kill,

I agree with Lindy. Why bother?

"Ballistic" uses the JBM engine and only costs $20 for the Field Tactical version. (plus $$$ for the iPod) The big attraction for me is the HUD with large virtual thumbwheels for Range, Wind Speed and Wind Direction. Spin up your settings on the wheels, aim the iPod at the target (if slope is required), read off the computed dope, adjust turrets (or hold) and that's it. Field use is very fast with no numbers to punch in. Of course, you still need to enter atmospherics, muzzle velocity, BCs etc well beforehand.

What I don't like: The iPod's lithium batteries are not field replaceable so if you can't recharge (needs USB connection) you'd better have your Mildot Master packed.

I've wrapped the .jar up into a .exe so it should work flawlessly on any PC with Java now. If you don't have Java, it automatically asks if you want to download the required Java, then runs.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance and suggestions. My kung-fu is feeling stronger! Now if I can only get it to print...

Here's the <span style="font-style: italic">new and improved</span> link:

Installs and runs just fine. GTG!
