A local shop mounted my 10x SS on my Remmy 700 (SPSV 308) using a one piece Leupold base and Leupold medium rings. The problem is that the bolt handle hits/drags on the scope and even knocks off my Butler Creek flip up cap. It looks like the base's windage adjustment is adjusted more to the bolt handle side and I'm thinking if I move it away a little it will at least keep the handle from rubbing and hopefully clear the lens cap. My question is adjusting the base windage a known value? Like one turn equals 1" at 100 yards? I'd hate to waste what's left of my Scenars on getting this back in so if I can get close without firing any shots that would let me only use them for the fine tuning.

Thanks!

Re: Help with Leupold base windage adjustment

Well, the base windage screws are very coarse adjustments. As I recall, 1/4 turn could move you as much as 6 inches, but I don't know that for sure, however, it is not a fine tune adjustment.

I only use these now if I have a rifle that has the screws that are bored off so much that the horizontal adjustment can't be made by the scope.(I only have seen one gun, a remington 700 that had this problem)

From your description, I would think that the scope has been canted significantly to the left, so the shop may not have bore sighted your gun.

I would start by eye balling the scope to the barrel, looking down from the top, and adjusting the windage screws until it appears to line up, if you don't have a bore sighter.

That will probably fix the issue with the bolt hitting the scope/covers.

At that point you will need to shoot and see how much off you are, and adjust them windage screws until you are within 6 inches at 100, although the closer you get to center, the beter off you would be.

Re: Help with Leupold base windage adjustment

I personally would center the windage on your scope by testing it in a V-Block set up. Once you can spin your scope in the v-block, and the vertical cross hair lines up on the same reference point, then bore sight the rifle at 100yrds using the windage screws.

Good luck!

I think that is what the guy did who mounted it. Just a little too fat for where it sits on that rifle. I took it over to the range and gave it a couple of turn which translates into about 15 feet or so at 100 yards! I wound up putting it back a little because I didn't want to loose all of the windage adjustment so it drags a little on the flip-up cap, but doesn't knock it off like it used to do. Thanks again you guys. Its GTG!
