Saw a show today where NASA has a gun that shoots at Mach 13 - to test for asteroid impact.

Their bullets flash when they hit....Impressive!

5 miles a second - that's 26,000 fps....whew....

They film at almost 1 million frames per second, this is all multimillion dollar equipment but impressive!

I think I saw this a year or two ago in American Rifleman. They use a squeeze bore to get it to seal and get close to the expansion rate of the fuel. They were shooting a plastic BB at a 6 inch or so piece of steel and it went clean through the thing. I will have to see if I can find it.

Hmmm...I wonder how many mils you'd need @ 100,000 yd (LOL).
