Anyone using an HK light? I see HK pistols with adapters running aftermarket lights and was wondering why? Seems simple to just use the HK rail and their light without the need for an adapter. I'm guessing cost? Any other reasons?
Because they are outdated and overpriced for what you get. The current x400 by surefire blows it out of the water.
You don't need an adapter if you have a newer model HK though. The USP's and the MK23's use a proprietary HK rail, but the HK45's and P30's and such use a picatinny rail.
Yeah, I figured it was something like that. I have a relatively late model USP tactical so it looks like I'm stuck with using the adapter. I bought it used with a GGG adapter and TLR-1 but I ordered a new Bladetech paddle holster and I'm afraid it won't fit with the adapter attached (light off).
You could always try the HK light, the Insight M2 runs $150 or so, might be worth a try. It's like 90 lumens where as the SF x400 is 170, but it might be enough.
I do love surefire products though.
I'm in the same boat, I have a USP, but all my other handguns, including my HK45c are 1913 railed, so I'd probably get an adapter so I can put whatever light on it I want, and I could swap it between guns.
I have the M2 on my USP Tactical .40 and like it. It is bulky though. I keep it on when I go to the range as I keep it on in the house as well. Has stood up to quite a few rounds. I use it as my HD pistol. Bladetech has a holster that will fit it with the light but it is a BIG package overall. You can find the M2 for 90 bucks every now and then if you look hard enough. About the only problem I have had is that during a long range day, about 1000-1500 rounds or so, the light will start to work loose. But that only happens after like 600+ rounds of continuous firing. I will say that I bought a Surefire X300(from fastford here) and it definitely is a more solidly built light. I am going to use it on my P30.
Appears this may be a non-issue. Just got off the phone with Bladetech. Jessica tells me they have GG&G adapters in house and they'll be able to incorporate that into the mold when my holster is made.
I gotta say...this is the second instance in a relatively short time that this company has come through for me. Getting rarer these days. Nice to find a company you can stick with for a long while.
I had a UTL light for my USP that I used as a bedside gun. I ended up selling it and getting a rail adapter so I could run one of my better, brighter lights. The UTL is a decent light just weak and bulky compared to what is available now. Good news is they re-sell very well because HK nuts love anything labeled HK....and mine was probably 8-10 yrs old.

I can only agree with this comment. HK or Insight Technology (I think Insight make it for HK) should update this light to LED standards brighter with longer run. It is decent but not great light and for what it costs there are better buys. I doubt a change or update will happen though if HK is going to the 1913 type rail system though.
An adapter and a different light will make for a better buy.
