I know there are some pig slayers out there. How and what can I use to bait in some pigs, without the cattle getting it?

Build a Hog Pipe. Put something stinky in it or corn or whatever you got. It keeps them busy trying to get the contents out.

I've also heard of guys using a post hole digger and digging straight down about 3-4'. Put sour corn or something down in the hole. They will stay busy trying to get down to it.

Usually we just make sour corn but when we can we like to go all out and mix anything we have available in the bucket. Corn, protein, beer, dr. Pepper, syrup, water, etc...Pretty much corn/protein mixed with water and anything sweet. I've never tried the pipe or hole technique that Dave mentioned but I know people that have used it with good results. Our philosophy when it comes to making hog bait is basically "The nastier it looks to you, the better".

Get a few 5 gallon buckets, corn, and the cheapest beer you can buy. Mix ingredients in the bucket and let it sit out in the sun for a week. Go to your spot and dig a good size hole. Dump the corn and beer in the hole and cover and mix it with the dirt. This makes them work for it and will keep them on the bait longer. Warning, you will have one big ass hole after they are done if you can't get back to the spot before they hit it.

Bury strawberry koolaid powder just below the surface. They'll find it & root it up. Also I've heard pour bleach low on a tree & hogs supposedly will rub on it.

Now will the cattle not mess with these corn mixtures because they are buried? And I can't dig too deep, I'm in south florida and the water table is pretty high on the property I hunt.

I am not sure what cattle will do with it. I would venture to guess they may try to eat it, but don't think they can root it up like a hog. I now cattle will eat just about anything with corn involved if they can get to it. You don't have to go to deep. Try a foot to two feet. The main purpose of burying it is to make them work for it and keep them on site longer. Give it a test run with a small batch if you are concerned about hurting the cows. You need to be ready to hunt that site hard after you bury it. Once the hogs locate it they can make pretty quick work of it if it.
I have not tried stink bait. It may work. Don't try and over think this. Hogs will eat anything you throw out there. Another thing you can do is save table scraps. It's cheap cause you are just going to throw it out anyways and it will draw them in. You can also just dump corn in a high traffic area. The point of the corn and beer is the smell is so strong they can smell it from a ways off and they will seek it out.

Thanks for the replies. Am trying to to not have to walk a couple hundred acres and hopefully stumble across them. Lookin to richen up the target environment.

just throw corn out... I've killed a bazillion pigs and trapped a trazillion with plain corn. If the pigs are there, they will find it.

we take corn in a bucket of water and put yeast in it and let it sit for about a week with a top on it the cows don't seem to like it because of the horrible smell. jello in powder form work pretty good also. the bucket we will hang in a tree and poke a couple holes in it and they will smell the sour corn and come to it and root around looking for the corn

All good ideas. Ive dug holes and used the pipe. Both work. You just want to get some stink in the air and the hogs will find it. Try baiting downwind of where you think hogs may be hanging out so the scent drifts to them.
I just use corn and then sprinkle some koolaide packets all over the ground around the corn. It smells great.
Not sure what to tell you about the cows. I have cows on my place but only once or twice have I had them come to my bait piles. Never really been an issue.

I keep reading about diesel and used motor oil. Aside from the environmental issues, has anyone tried this? Apparently, hogs like to roll in it to keep the bugs off?

There are plenty of foods and scents that you can bait them with THAT WORK. Dont know why anyone would even consider using diesel or oil as an attractant. Dont care if it's your property, a lease, or public land, just wouldnt do it.

Yeah don't do that. A hog will eat damn near anything so why pollute the ground with something like that.

Yeah heard the diesel thing before. Just can't bring myself to pollute the ground, plus I eat some of the small ones. Don't know if it would effect or not but why risk it?

mix corn, stale donuts from a local shop normally free, some cheap beer in a 5 gallon bucket and use that for bait
