Looking for some sound advice as to a pistol for my mother. She had an interesting night last night when she found out someone had gotten into her back house (rental), and we found out he was related to the renters, recently released felon with a known crack addiction...

At that point she denounced at least some of her socialist views and decided that it might be a good idea to invest in some 'home security' and learn how to protect herself should she need to.

My only current sidearm is a 1911...which is 'too scary'...and she is completely against just hanging onto my 500 as 'it would blow her arm off...'

That being said what I'm looking for some sound advice about what to get her started with. Thanks guys.

Re: Home defense...

Double barrel coach gun with light 1 1/8 trap load of 7 1/2's cheap with BIG holes in the end that tend to make people listen. Exposed hammers and break action give an extra measure of safety in my opinion for the inexperienced.

Re: Home defense...

Not recommending 12 guage, not recommending .357.

Where to start?

1. Makes sure she knows that if there is a panic button on the remote keys for her car that she should trigger that whenever she is concerned. Number 1, sound the car alarm.

2. Get your Mom a house alarm system. Cheap insurance and they work. Have them install the system with an "around the neck" alarm trigger so she can always have it with her when she feels uncomfortable.

3. Get your Mom a great flashlight with easy to find button. Get outside lights with autosensors up and working.

4. If she is capable of acting rationally under stress (many are not and tragic accidents occur) then perhaps she should begin to consider nothing larger than a .38 revolver. No safeties, no slides, no clips, no empty cylinders.

Best of luck, we are all going through the exact same thing now.

Re: Home defense...

Glock in 9 or 40. One of the easiest most comfortable guns for women -- at least prior to the finger grip frames.

They like small revolvers when they hold them, but a small revolver is hell on a woman to shoot. Heavier is better up to the point she can comfortably aim.

Take her to a rental range.

Re: Home defense...

I personaly let my wife pick out her own handgun for home and she picked a sub compact XD40 with night sights. I at least know that if she ever had use it it will work and now knowing how she shoots I know they will be dead. Truth is a handgun has alot of good reasons why not to buy a shotgun but I personaly prefer both. Handgun is shorter, lighter and with a good light makes for a sound protection piece.

Re: Home defense...

9mm. sig 229 Or maybe an M&P with the thumb safety.

Re: Home defense...

Thanks for the starting points guys...probably take her to a local range next Monday. If everything goes well, which it should, I'll take her somewhere to pick out whatever she finds most comfortable for her.

Re: Home defense...

the judge?

J/K

mid size revolver should do but teach her how to hold and fire it.

Re: Home defense...

If just looking for home defense she can go with a mossberg 500 youth a 410 with buckshot is more than managable and more powerful than any handgun she could handle.

Re: Home defense...

personally think its wrong to off ones mother but if one had to id say a good 12 gauge is best althoufgh many rave about the lethality of 22 lr.

Re: Home defense...

Get her a shotgun.

And what does being a socialist have to do with guns? Socialism is an economic system.

Re: Home defense...

Socialism is favored by leftist.

20 ga SG - use 00 buck NOT birdshot

I'm with Cartman,I'll lay odds she likes a Glock 17 or 19.

Good locks

A dog (any kind)

Sticks in windows and sliding doors

Exterior lights

Trim the exterior bushes back to enhance vis.

Random vists by her loving son who makes it clear that he loves his Momma and rolls with a shovel and 50# of quick lime.

It'll all work out.

Eviction, relet, credit, criminal background check, and 5 respectable folks (preferrably you Momma knows 'em too) that can vouch for the new tenant is the other half of the plan.

Good luck

Re: Home defense...

Try and get her to shoot a .410 or 20 gauge Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 to show her it's not going to "blow her arm off." In my limited experience, it's easier to get someone shooting a shotgun before a handgun or rifle.

Set a milk jug full of water at 10 yards and let her hit it with 00 and see if she doesn't think that would be effective against an intruder. Have her do the same thing with a Glock or a .38 revolver and see which one she would rather have as life support.

That demonstration converted my stubborn-as-a-mule mother in law who "just wanted to have a pistol under the pillow" for home defense. She wasn't a bad shot with a pistol at all either - she hit the target both times - but for ease of use and effectiveness, the shotgun's usually the best choice for a new gun owner.

Re: Home defense...

How about an M1 carbine with a 30 round mag full of hollowpoints or one of the pistol caliber carbines in 9mm or .45ACP. Light weight, light recoil more than 5 or 8 shots.

Years ago, my brother was an airline pilot who had to travel "alligator alley" between Naples and Miami Florida. He carried an old Spanish .38 revolver with one inoperative cylinder. I tried to tell him that this was just enough gun to get him into trouble and not enough to get him out. I suggested a folding stock M1, Mini-14 or AK-47 with several extra 30 round magazines.

Get her a large German Shepard. Unless she is willing to practice with it and has DECIDED that she WILL use it if necessary a pistol has a greater chance of being used ON her than BY her.

If she HAS to have a gun, get her a Taurus .38 special. They are not expensive, extremely reliable and take no skill to operate. Point and pull the trigger until it goes "click".

This is almost the exact instruction I gave my wife. Point and pull trigger until it does not go boom anymore, then call 911. I also elected to go with a small frame revolver for her. My bro, Nashlaw hooked her up with a nice refinished Colt Detective special. A little class for the lady!

Re: Home defense...

I got my wife a s&w mod 60 with crimson trace laser grips. The original point click device. Nothing says stop like a red dot on your chest

Re: Home defense...

Listen, IMHO I think for home defense most of the time it is all about looking big. I would love to think I am a bad ass under stress and you know I know my wife would like to think the same. But woken up groggy and squinting and rather disoriented I know I wouldn't want my mother walking around with a semi auto anything. The car alarm flash light and a good dog sounds great. If a firearm has to be the next option a 20 gauge or 28 gauge pum action would be the choice. More for the sound it makes. If I'm in ear shot of a perp and I rack my shot gun and they don't leave I know I'm shooting this guy. The sound is universal. My first round is rock salt. Close range its gonna stop a guy. My second round will split him in two. No jurry is going to put me a way for excessive!

Re: Home defense...

You know, something like a Rossi .38 would do well for her. Its cheap, powergul enough without kicking in her hand, reliable, and not intimidating to her in appearence.

I agree with LoneWolfUSMC though, she has to have it set in her mind that when go time happens the choice was made a long time ago. That's where a lot of problems start, people generally want to do no harm but those on the other side of the room think differently. You can make a game out of it. Set up plates or balloons and have her start shooting. Five targets, five rounds. Give her something to win and start easy. Once she starts having fun you won't have to bribe her.

Re: Home defense...

I always love these responces. The only sound advice I have heard so far. Alarms car house air canister like at the games you hear. Dogs ? Most old people dont like big dogs around, to hard to manage and feed and care for. So for the dog alarm, a male JRT. It will protect and bite ANYthing it doesnt like, including the son comming over for visits. Now for the gun, KISS ! Inexperienced old lady with a auto anything ? Come on. Side by side in a 12 for 90% presentation. Hell everyone knows what it is staring at the pointy end. Cant load it wrong. One big leaver to open it to see the holes in witch to put the plastic thingies in. Close it and point it at BG meath head with JRT firmly attached to his ankle and alarms going off like the 4th of July.

Re: Home defense...

I'm with Lone, shoot & 4. If I had to give this advice to my mother, first would be a dog. However most any mid-size dog would probably do, I have a sweet female yellow lab that is like a kitten with my disabled wife, but will go apeshit when someone she does not "know" comes around the house.

If she just needed a gun, 38 revolver with crimson trace grips (as far as I know my mom has never fired a gun, but even SHE is a member of the NRA). I'd be afraid any long gun could be easily taken away from her in a house, if she were outside it would make more sense to me.....IMHO.

Re: Home defense...

Sounds like she needs a suppressor with a laser sight.

curious how well that suppressor works considering you are still wearin' plugs?

Re: Home defense...

I'd take her to the range and see what feels comfortable with her. Some women can handle a 12 gauge, and some can't handle a .38. I'd get her an RPG perssonally.

Re: Home defense...

I got my 84 year old dad and 79 year old mom a double barrel coach gun in 12 ga. I got them some little short rounds of 4-0 and 0 buckshot. Very easy to handle. Little recoil.

My dad is a Marine who was a 2nd Division guy in the South Pacific in WWII and he has no interest in a pistol. He wants a gun he can get my mom and him into the closet and if the bad guy comes to the door he dies.

So the Stoeger shotgun cost about $300 and $ 50 for a bunch of shells. A little practice with the shorty shells and they were confident.

LMAO...and she wont need to spend money on ammo either...

Re: Home defense...

I have to laugh everytime this comes up I think of the chainsaw someone recommended. Nobody is going to try a take away and the fact they think your nuts adds heavily into the presentation.

My other half is not very excited about firearms but she digs on the Ruger PC40 carbine, very easy to hit with and effective. Her plan is to hold the top of the staircase until all of the kids are in the masterbedroom and then anyone that comes though the door is filled with holes. The first thing I preached is to never go looking for someone in the house.

If she is sensitive with muzzle blast a reliable 10-22 might be hard to beat as well. The bolt is easy to manipulate as well, my mom is fairly healthy but could not reliably pull the slide back on a glock regarless of the technique used.

Re: Home defense...

Listen to topo-sniper 38 revolver with crimson trace grips would be the best and safest. If she has no experience with gun all you people suggested the semiautomatic shame on you have you ever been around people that don’t know how to use a weapon.

Re: Home defense...

being from Kalifornia you should know all you have to do is unplug the chainsaw from the wall outlet and it is nothing more than a stone.
smile.gif

To most Kalifornians this is funny because there are local ordinances that require electric yard tools now because we don't want to "F" up the environment. Silly people.

Re: Home defense...

World War Two Air Siren Horn. I don't think crimeals are going to stick around very long,....we had one install on our Indian Reservation communty. I don't know if its part of the Home Land Sercurity Program. But that would be a plus attention getter.

That's a really good idea. Where do you get them?

Re: Home defense...

A nice 38 sounds like a reasonable solution.

Re: Home defense...

Go with a shot gun filled with bird shot wont go into the room.Get her some low recoil ammo to pratice with then load it up with the good stuff when she is at home

Re: Home defense...

My home defense arsenal consists of my M1A, 20 round mags loaded with FMJ XM80, (cause you can never have too much penetration), a smith and wesson model 66 .44 magnum, stoked with buffalo bore 300 grainers, and for my wife, she has a Marlin 1895 45/70 loaded with Garret 500 grain solids...

Oh wait, are you reffering to home defense against humans?

ok, in that case I use..........
